What that David Lynch Netflix series would have been…..

According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s CEO, David Lynch had been planning a series for the streaming platform, which he intended to direct. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and global lockdown, production was halted. By the time restrictions eased, Lynch’s health issues (Emphysema) made it highly unlikely that he could direct the series, as this condition makes it difficult for him to even walk a few steps without struggling to breathe, despite his intention to direct from his bed using radio communication.

In his writing, Sarandos stated, “He approached Netflix with an idea for a limited series, and we eagerly accepted it. The production was by David Lynch, brimming with enigma and risks, which made us excited to embark on this creative journey with such a talented individual. Unfortunately, COVID-19 and some health concerns delayed the project’s realization, but we assured him that as soon as he was ready, we were fully committed.

In November 2020, we got our first glimpse into a project that was initially codenamed ‘Wisteria,’ but is now known as “Unrecorded Night.” David Lynch originally intended to write and direct 13 episodes for this series, collaborating with his long-time cinematographer Peter Deming, who worked on films like “Lost Highway” and “Mulholland Drive.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve eagerly been following the progress of the project that was put on hold due to Covid-19. When asked about its revival, Deming expressed optimism, saying something along the lines of “I believe it will find its way back eventually.” Fast forward to May 2024, Lynch’s trusted producer, Sabrina Sutherland, hinted during a Q&A that there might be a possibility of Lynch revisiting the limited series. However, she added that he has been immersed in his artistic and musical pursuits lately.

…..and that’s what that David Lynch Netflix series would have been.
