Issue #105 of “The Walking Dead” offers a startling glimpse. Published in 2012, it delves into the Sanctuary for the first time, a steel mill transformed into Negan’s Saviors’ stronghold. Following close on the heels of Glenn’s gruesome demise, a seemingly friendly Negan leads Carl Grimes on a tour within the Sanctuary. Here, he presents Carl to his group of women dressed in lingerie. Later, Negan makes Carl reveal his missing eye and sings a song while threatening him with his bat, Lucille. As if that wasn’t enough, Negan forces Carl to witness the mutilation of a disobedient Savior using a hot iron.
It’s clear that Negan prefers to have women as his ‘wives’, an option not offered to other Saviors who must earn goods and services through points. As he puts it, “When I select a new wife, it’s always entirely voluntary.” He adds, “It’s a privilege to be in my presence, no longer having to trade points for goods and services. However, this privilege comes with a cost: absolute loyalty. And sometimes, that can be a tough pill to swallow. But swallow it they must… or face the consequences, which might be severe.
When Amber, who Negan considers as his wife, gets found with her ex-boyfriend Mark, it stirs up Negan’s anger – along with his desire to use his iron.
Negan makes it clear to Amber that her presence with them is entirely by choice. As he comforts the sobbing girl, he says, “I don’t want anyone here if they aren’t willing to be.” However, if Amber chooses Mark over him, Negan cautions her, “You’ll lose your benefits and return to the job you held before Sherry introduced you to our group, but that’s an option for you.
He yells that she shouldn’t be unfaithful to him, and he asks her, “So what’s your decision? Are you returning to Mark? Earning points through deceit again? Working for your meals once more? Or are you staying?” In a tearful state, Amber is pressured into remaining, while Mark is humiliated by the long-term stigma of his actions being etched on his face.
He screams at her not to cheat on him and asks if she’s going back to an old relationship or staying put. Amber cries as she’s forced to stay, and Mark is embarrassed by the lasting effects of his actions, which are visible on his face.
In simpler terms, Kirkman notes in the revised, colored edition of The Walking Dead Deluxe #105 that among social media discussions, the harem concept from the comic was the most contentious issue. This was more debated than some future Whisperers storylines, which he found surprising. He draws a boundary; he won’t go beyond it, and the remark about not crossing a line is not a pun.
Kirkman pointed out that if you want to witness an extremely grim and relentless portrayal of the apocalypse, you should check out Garth Ennis’ ‘Crossed’ series. He noted that while The Walking Dead may seem mild in comparison, this was intentional. Kirkman ensured that any harsh realities included in the story mirrored actual life experiences. He often argued that even at its darkest, The Walking Dead’s depictions were not as severe as reality, as one could find more gruesome events reported daily in a newspaper.”
“Kirkman emphasized that he didn’t want to sugarcoat the world’s darkness out of concern for offending anyone.
