Currently, Copilot+ PCs find themselves in an unusual position. Despite their impressive hardware, stylish design, and top-notch performance, the Copilot+ PC platform hasn’t gained widespread popularity yet. Instead, individuals tend to buy and appreciate devices that just happen to be Copilot+ PCs, rather than intentionally seeking out a computer specifically labeled as a Copilot+ PC. However, this situation might shift with the introduction of an exclusive new feature for Copilot+ PCs.
In a recent Dev Channel update for Windows 11, there’s now enhanced functionality for the revamped Windows Search. This feature leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to facilitate easier file finding. With the advanced Windows Search, you can perform searches using conversational language, and your computer will locate the file for you. The AI technology, capable of running locally on devices with Copilot+, eliminates the need to remember specific file names.
So far, Copilot+ PCs have missed out on a standout feature that’s unique to the platform. Although Windows has certain built-in functionalities that leverage NPUs and are exclusive to Copilot+ PCs, these features aren’t widely viewed as essential. For instance, Windows Studio Effects can be appealing, but they wouldn’t typically motivate someone to buy a PC. While Windows Recall has the potential to generate interest and boost sales, its release has been postponed multiple times.
Many find it confusing that Copilot+ PC and AI PC brands are used interchangeably, especially since Microsoft has been using the Copilot name extensively. It’s essential to clarify that these two terms do not mean the same thing, requiring consumers to conduct additional research when purchasing a computer with AI capabilities. The fact that Copilot+ PCs were running Windows 11 on Arm for several months adds to this confusion.
The revised paragraph maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language, making it easier for readers to understand the main points.
Last year, I delved into the intricacies of the Copilot+ PC launch and offered some forecasts for 2025. If Microsoft introduces unique Copilot+ PC functionalities this year, it could successfully steer attention towards the platform, rather than having people inadvertently purchase a Copilot+ PC. An enhanced Windows Search might be the initial essential feature for Copilot+ PCs.
Microsoft outlines the new Copilot+ PC experiences in a recent blog post:
New Copilot+ PC experiences
Improved Windows Search
On Copilot+ PCs, we’ve simplified the process of locating your files, photos, and settings in Windows 11 by integrating semantic indexing with conventional indexing. Now, you can find what you need without worrying about file names or specific words within a document or setting. Instead, just type what you’re thinking about in File Explorer, the Windows search box on your taskbar, or in Settings. For instance, you can search for images by typing “bridge at sunset”, documents related to “Europe trip budget”, or settings like “change my theme”. The advanced 40+ TOPS NPU onboard Copilot+ PCs ensures these enhanced search capabilities work even without an internet connection.
Currently, finding files on your Copilot+ computer with enhanced Windows Search is limited to files saved locally in indexed areas on your PC. To customize the locations that are being indexed or to index your entire PC, you can navigate to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. In an upcoming update, we will enable searching for documents and photos stored in cloud storage services like OneDrive.
For the time being, finding options similar to “alter my theme” can be done within the Settings application. However, in an upcoming update, you’ll be able to make these changes directly through the Windows search box located on your taskbar.
The enhanced Windows Search features will be progressively introduced to Snapdragon-equipped Copilot+ PC users who are part of the Windows Insider program. Soon, these improvements will also be available on Copilot+ PCs that use AMD and Intel processors. Presently, these experiences are accessible in a few languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish) and certain document formats. The supported document types consist of .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, .xlsx for documents, as well as image files like .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, and .ico.
New text action for Click to Do (Preview)
On Copilot+ PCs, you’ll encounter a fresh text editing option called “Refine.” To test it out, simply hit Win + Click on a piece of text directly or press Win + Q followed by navigation to the text you wish to edit and polish. Once the menu opens, you’ll find the new action listed under “Rewrite” > “Refine”.
