Pokemon Cards Back at McDonald’s: Dragon Invasion in Happy Meals!

The Sonic the Hedgehog Happy Meal offer has concluded as of today, but instead, McDonald’s is now providing free items tied to a completely different video game franchise: Pokémon! In participating U.S. locations, you can find Pokémon-themed Happy Meals that come with a pack containing four cards. The promotion offers a total of 15 unique cards, showcasing beloved characters like Pikachu, Eevee, Jigglypuff, and even Charizard! Interestingly, the focus of this promotion seems to be on Dragon-type Pokémon, as Drampa, Rayquaza, Dragapult, and others are also highlighted. You’ll notice these Pokémon taking center stage in the promotional materials too.

In this revamped scenario, Dragon-themed elements have invaded every corner of the Happy Meal. For example, Dragapult is seen on the apple slice bag, while Miraidon adorns the milk jug. The business has even unveiled a promotional trailer, showcasing Dragonite soaring through a cityscape to reach a McDonald’s outlet.

To mark the occasion of the promotion, the official Happy Meal site now features a compact Pokemon game that can be played directly within your web browser at no cost. In this game, you navigate a Poke Ball through a labyrinth in search of hidden or visible Pokemon. The movement of the Poke Ball resembles the Ice Path mazes from the classic games Pokemon Gold and Silver, as it slides continuously along the path without stopping midway. As an added bonus, visitors can also download free coloring pages inspired by the franchise.

2021 saw a McDonald’s promotion for Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) create quite a fuss, as resellers quickly snapped up all the cards, leaving fans and children unable to obtain them. To address this issue, both McDonald’s and The Pokemon Company took proactive steps. They enforced rules preventing employees from selling the toys outside of a Happy Meal, and boosted production to match the sky-high demand. Since then, annual Pokemon Happy Meal promotions have become commonplace, with recent ones running more smoothly.

A couple of years ago, the Pokemon Trading Card Game witnessed a surge of revived enthusiasm, particularly on platforms like Twitch where unboxing live streams gained popularity. Moreover, the launch of Pokemon TCG Pocket last year has further fueled curiosity in the tangible cards. Recently, The Pokemon Company introduced a new set named Scarlet & Violet – Prismatic Evolutions, and collectors are finding it extremely challenging to acquire these coveted cards. The demand for them has outstripped expectations, and resellers appear to be active in the market. Fingers crossed that this year’s McDonald’s promotion will run smoothly so that those eager to own these cards can do so effortlessly.
