The iconic 1990s cartoon character, Captain Planet, is set for a surprising return. Known as Earth’s champion of environmentalism, Captain Planet left an indelible mark on TV screens, inspiring young minds and promoting the importance of protecting our planet. Despite numerous attempts over the years to revive this eco-warrior, none have been successful… until now. Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products are launching a new Captain Planet comic book series, marking the first time in over three decades that a comic featuring Captain Planet will be published. This fresh series is being penned by writer David Pepose (Space Ghost, Cable) and illustrated by artist Eman Casallos (Vampirella, Pathfinder).
David Pepose, a writer, has long yearned to work on a specific project that would truly showcase his talents – for over a decade, that project has been none other than “Captain Planet”. This iconic character will appear alongside the Planeteers, five young individuals from various corners of the globe who were chosen by Gaia. Each of these children possess elemental rings imbued with one of Earth’s fundamental forces. When united, they can summon Captain Planet using their rings.
As a devoted fan of the classic Captain Planet and the Planeteers cartoon, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be pouring my passion into the new Captain Planet comic! This venture is aimed at both those who remember Captain Planet from their childhood years and the younger generation. Each character will have their time to shine, and you can anticipate seeing familiar faces like the show’s legendary villains, starting with Lucian Plunder.
Who are Captain Planet’s Planeteers?
In the first issue of the series, we find ourselves following five ordinary individuals from different parts of the world. They are chosen by Gaia, the Earth’s High Priestess, to harness the elemental rings that represent the earth, fire, wind, water, and heart. When humanity faces its most critical challenges, each Planeteer discovers they possess powers linked to one of these fundamental forces. In times of extreme peril, these five can unite their abilities to summon the world’s mightiest hero – Captain Planet!
1. Kwame, originating from Ghana, possesses the ability to control Earth’s elements. Hailing from the U.S., Wheeler specializes in harnessing Fire. Linka, born in Russia, has the power to manipulate Wind. Gi, tracing her roots back to South Korea, can command Water. Lastly, Ma-Ti, representing Brazil, utilizes his abilities with Heart.

As a passionate advocate for our planet, I know that before we, the eco-warriors, can fully harness our newfound abilities in the fight for environmental equity, we must first learn to rely on one another. This journey will only become more challenging when Gaia, our Earth Mother, is taken captive, thrusting us, the green and inexperienced Planeteers, into a real-life test against Lucian Plunder’s well-funded forces. Our initial battle against these relentless exploiters of our world may not be the toughest, but it marks the beginning of an epic struggle!
The first issue of the comic series “Captain Planet” will be available for purchase starting April 23rd, coinciding with Earth Day week. Notably, all issues of “Captain Planet” are being printed on 70% recycled paper, following Dynamite’s commitment to sustainability in their publishing. As a sneak peek, we have an unlettered preview of “Captain Planet” #1 below, and there are variant covers designed by artists Mark Spears, Christian Ward, Ben Oliver, Jae Lee, and June Chung, as well.
