It is highly probable that the upcoming Super Mario game, whatever its title may be, will fill the same spot on the Switch 2 that Super Mario Odyssey occupied on the original Switch. Mario Kart 9 appears to be a certainty as the primary launch title for the console, which means it’s taking the place previously held by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This suggests that the next major 3D Mario platformer is likely to debut several months later, following a similar timeline to Super Mario Odyssey during the Switch’s initial launch period. Given that eight years have passed since the series’ last mainline 3D installment, it seems all but certain (as close as predictions can get with Nintendo involved).
