One primary attraction of superheroes lies in their selflessness, going beyond the thrill of battling villains, possessing extraordinary abilities, and engaging in spectacular action. Being a hero essentially means contributing to the community’s welfare and preserving lives. Occasionally, superhero movies may divert attention away from this aspect. For example, the movie Man of Steel concentrated so heavily on the confrontation between Zod and Superman that it set the stage for a negative portrayal in its sequel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, where Superman is perceived as a menace rather than a hero by the public (including Batman and the government). This portrayal fails to convey the essence of hope, which is crucial for Superman’s character. While some films shift focus from this message of hope, others like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Richard Donner’s Superman II, underscore why it’s essential that heroes serve as beacons of hope for their communities.
In both the initial “Spider-Man” and “Superman” movies, it is evident that these characters offer assistance to their communities beyond merely combating their main adversaries. This altruistic behavior persists in subsequent films as well. These figures are not only symbols of power with extraordinary abilities; they serve as role models and cornerstones for their community. The influence they exert transcends the mere number of lives they have saved.
Metropolis Stands By Superman Even When He Is Down
In the continuations of both heroes’ stories, they are pitted against their enemies in challenging situations. For Superman, he encounters Zod, Ursa, and Non who have the upper hand, overwhelming him in numbers and strength. Despite his valiant efforts, Superman often finds himself at a disadvantage. This is particularly true when Zod and his allies discover that Superman’s vulnerability lies with the people. As they attack innocent civilians, Superman prioritizes saving as many lives as he can, which unfortunately leaves him vulnerable to further attacks. Consequently, there is extensive damage, with a significant portion of the city being obliterated.
Regardless of the destruction in their city, the people persist in having faith in Superman. In moments where things appear hopeless, the citizens cling onto hope. Some are even prepared to join the battle while Superman is weak – despite the apparent disadvantage against Zod, Ursa, and Non. He instills within them a sense of hope, and encourages them to strive to be heroes themselves when he cannot.
New Yorkers Will Always Have Spider-Man’s Back
In a similar vein to “Spider-Man 2”, Spidey experiences an intense bout of fatigue following his heroic act of saving a train loaded with passengers. With no other help in sight, he single-handedly prevents the train from derailing, an action that would have undoubtedly resulted in a tragic loss of life. Despite his success, Spider-Man collapses without his mask on, but the citizens of New York City manage to catch him and escort him back onto the train.
It’s clear to everyone inside the cart who Spider-Man is – a young man much like any other New Yorker. Not only do they promise to conceal his identity, but when Doctor Octopus suddenly invades the train, every passenger steps up to protect him. They warn Doc Ock that if he wants Spider-Man, he’ll have to face each and every one of them first.
Just as civilians witness Superman struggling and at a disadvantage, they observe Spider-Man in the same predicament. Yet instead of losing faith, they are encouraged to take action and assist however they can, for they understand that Spider-Man would do the same for them. Similarly, neither hero asks the public to fight their battles for them, but the influence these heroes have on their communities is undeniable.
Superman and Spider-Man consistently devote themselves to rescuing others and serving their communities. Regardless if it’s assisting with emergencies caused by nature, saving lives, apprehending wrongdoers, or battling formidable enemies, they are always ready. Moreover, they frequently prioritize the protection of civilians in their neighborhoods, earning them the status of symbols of hope within their communities.
Additionally, when people observe role models like Spider-Man and Superman, they comprehend that if these figures stumble, it doesn’t signify a reason for them to lose faith or judge them harshly. Instead, they take inspiration from this situation and strive to be heroes in their own lives. This provides the space and understanding for these characters to regroup and rejoin the battle when they are ready.
