Netflix has confirmed that Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia will initially have an exclusive IMAX cinema release before becoming available on the streaming service. Details about the film’s rollout strategy were shared during Netflix’s Q4 2024 Earnings Call on January 21, 2025, with CEO Ted Sarandos revealing that the cinematic run will span only a fortnight. This news follows recent reports indicating the movie’s IMAX premiere scheduled for Thanksgiving 2026, providing more insight into Netflix’s plans for this highly anticipated theatrical event, which is expected to be one of their most grandiose projects yet.
The main plan is to provide Netflix members access to movies ahead of the general public, as Ted Sarandos explained during the earnings call. He clarified that releasing “The Chronicles of Narnia” in IMAX theaters is a strategic move, not the primary strategy. This is often done to meet award criteria, fulfill festival requirements, and generate buzz. However, the Narnia release is unique as it’s designed as a “two-week special event,” specifically on IMAX screens. Sarandos highlighted that this approach is exclusive to IMAX screens, making it distinct from other releases because of the large screen size. He also pointed out that working with IMAX simplifies the release process significantly.
Netflix typically follows a familiar approach with its blockbuster series like Narnia, by initially releasing them in cinemas, albeit on a smaller scale compared to traditional theatrical releases. Lately, Netflix has unveiled plans for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to have a cinema premiere, while previous titles such as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, The Gray Man, and Red Notice all had brief cinematic showings before becoming available on the streaming platform. Interestingly, the upcoming IMAX release for Narnia, scheduled across around 1,000 international venues, marks one of Netflix’s largest commitments to cinema screenings so far.
Although Amy Pascal initially set the production start for July 2025, Ted Sarandos’ latest comments hint that the schedule might not be definitive. He expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Greta on the film, stating, “We can’t wait to get it into production so we can share how fantastic this movie is, rather than where it will be shown.” His focus on getting the project into production seems to imply that the July 2025 start date may not hold. Despite this uncertainty, Sarandos remains optimistic about the film and its director, praising Greta as an “incredible director” and the project as “really exciting.
What We Know About Netflix’s The Chronicles of Narnia Reboot
The journey to adapt C.S. Lewis’s beloved fantasy series for screens has been a complex one since Netflix secured the book rights in 2018. However, momentum really picked up in July 2023 when Greta Gerwig, fresh from her triumph with Barbie, was revealed as both writer and director. Producer Markus Pascal characterizes the adaptation as a “completely new approach” to Narnia, hinting at a potential reinterpretation of the classic tales with a rock ‘n’ roll twist, indicating an innovative reinvention of the original content.
Greta Gerwig’s participation signals a major advancement in Netflix’s endeavor to transform all seven books in Lewis’s series into both movies and TV shows. As of now, she is set to oversee at least two parts. This shift signifies a move away from earlier adaptations, such as the trilogy produced by Disney and Walden Media between 2005 and 2010, which could only translate three out of seven books onto the screen before the series came to an end.
The project signifies a substantial advancement in Gerwig’s professional journey, transitioning from intimately-focused character studies such as “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” to the box office triumph of “Barbie,” and now venturing into grand fantasy realms. She has expressed her intention to handle the material with added diligence, acknowledging her deep respect for Lewis’s work. As for the casting, it’s still a secret, but the production already has a positive nod from William Moseley, who played Peter Pevensie in the Disney versions.
Until further notice, Greta Gerwig’s The Chronicles of Narnia comes to IMAX on December 2026.
