Leonardo DiCaprio & Martin Scorsese’s New Movie Just Took a Big Step Forward

Progress has been made on the long-anticipated movie adaptation of “The Devil in the White City”. As per “The Hollywood Reporter”, 20th Century Studios has acquired the rights for development. Leonardo DiCaprio is in discussions to take on the lead role, while Martin Scorsese could be at the helm as director. If everything proceeds, this would be their seventh collaboration on a feature film, with “Killers of the Flower Moon” having been released in 2023. At this point, the project is still in its infancy and does not have a script yet.

The Devil in the White City” refers to Erik Larson’s 2003 non-fiction book, a true crime account, and narrates the stories of Daniel Burnham, an architect for the World’s Fair, and H.H. Holmes, a notorious serial killer. The novel skillfully blends the captivating story of the 1893 World’s Fair with the chilling tale of Holmes who exploited the fair as a means to entice his victims towards their demise. The journey from book to movie has been an extended one, with initial reports in 2010 suggesting that Leonardo DiCaprio was developing a film adaptation, considering himself for the role of Holmes. Additionally, there have been other iterations featuring Tom Cruise and Kathryn Bigelow involved in various aspects of production.

Recently, it emerged in 2019 that Hulu had been planning a TV series based on the book. Initially, Keanu Reeves was slated to star, with Todd Field directing the first two episodes and both DiCaprio and Scorsese involved as producers. However, in 2023, Hulu announced that the series had been shelved, leaving the adaptation uncertain once more.

Will The Devil in the White City Adaptation Happen?

Although the latest news about the movie version of The Devil in the White City seems hopeful, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard something about the project. Given its early stage of development, it remains uncertain when viewers might get a chance to see it. It’s also worth noting that Scorsese projects sometimes don’t reach completion as planned. Last spring, news broke that Scorsese and DiCaprio were collaborating on another project: a fresh take on the life story of Frank Sinatra. Initially, Scorsese was set to direct with DiCaprio in the role of Sinatra, while Jennifer Lawrence portrayed Sinatra’s second wife, Ava Gardner. The film was slated to begin production last November, but soon after its announcement, Nancy Sinatra, Sinatra’s daughter, voiced her disapproval of the leads. By mid-August of last year, the planned start date for filming had been postponed.

Back in 2024, Scorsese confirmed that he had penned a screenplay for a film centered around the life of Jesus. Yet, just as I eagerly anticipated its release, it appears that this cinematic masterpiece has once again taken a backseat.
