Director Christopher Landon, known for horror successes like “Freaky” and “Happy Death Day“, is steering a nerve-wracking thriller with a chilling twist on contemporary dating. The initial trailer for the film titled “Drop” introduces Emmy nominee Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus”) as a widow who finds herself in a harrowing predicament when ominous messages threaten her children’s lives unless she murders her current date. The plotline of the movie appears to be an intriguing amalgamation of modern-day technology concerns and traditional thriller elements. Produced by genre heavyweight Jason Blum and action titan Michael Bay, “Drop” signifies Landon’s comeback to cinema after the 2023 Netflix ghost tale “We Have a Ghost“.
The trailer for ‘Drop’ introduces Fahy as Violet, a single mother who re-enters the dating world, but her night takes a deadly turn when cryptic AirDrop messages appear on her phone. Her date, portrayed by Brandon Sklenar from ‘1923’, becomes both a possible victim and suspect as the technological menace intensifies. The ensemble also features Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, and Ed Weeks. Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach of ‘Truth or Dare’ fame pen the script. This project boasts an impressive lineup of producers including Jason Blum’s Blumhouse, famous for hits like ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ and ‘M3GAN’, as well as Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes banner, recognized for horror franchises such as ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘The Purge’.
Leaving “Scream VIII” was a major change for Landon, having stepped down from the problematic “Scream VII” production in December 2023. He expressed his feelings about the situation on social media at the time, calling it “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” Fortunately, this departure opened up the opportunity for him to work on “Drop,” a project that seems to merge his knack for crafting suspenseful horror settings with insightful commentary on modern digital-era apprehensions. This combination has been beneficial throughout his career.
Christopher Landon’s Evolution Through Modern Horror
Landon’s adventure into the horror genre started when he became a screenwriter. His initial significant work was in 2007 with “Disturbia,” which was essentially a contemporary technological adaptation of Hitchcock’s “Rear Window.” This film was successful both critically and commercially, earning over $118 million globally and receiving acclaim for its innovative approach to surveillance anxiety. Moreover, Landon contributed to several installments in the “Paranormal Activity” series before directing his first movie with 2014’s “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
In 2017, the filmmaker found his unique style in the movie “Happy Death Day,” a blend of slasher films and time-loop plots, starring Jessica Rothe as a student who is compelled to relive her own death repeatedly. This film was a massive commercial hit, earning over $125 million worldwide on a production budget of only $4.8 million. The 2019 sequel, “Happy Death Day 2U,” pushed the boundaries further by introducing science fiction elements, although its global gross of $64 million marked a considerable decrease compared to the original. Despite this drop, the “Happy Death Day” series has maintained a devoted fanbase, and Landon is currently working on a third installment.
2020’s movie “Freaky” solidified Landon’s recognition for blending genres by merging the body-swap comedy setup with slasher terror. Starring Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton, it garnered impressive reviews for its imaginative concept and execution, with critics appreciating Vaughn’s intense portrayal of a teenager trapped in a serial killer’s body. Unfortunately, its theatrical run was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, restraining its box office earnings despite good word-of-mouth. Upcoming film “Drop” offers Landon another chance to shine at the box office, especially considering he is working within his comfort zone of digital terrors.
Drop will be available on April 11, 2025.
