The 2025 Academy Awards are set to be a historic night.
On January 23rd, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced nominations in 23 categories via live stream, and certain names are generating quite a stir within the Hollywood scene. Emilia Pérez is dominating with a total of 13 nominations spread across various categories, including cinematography, film editing, directing, and Best Picture nomination.
However, it was the groundbreaking actress Karla Sofía Gascón who created history by becoming the first openly transgender woman to receive an Oscar nomination, leaving everyone in awe.
In a remarkable achievement, the Spanish actress received a nomination for the Best Actress category, due to her outstanding performance as the main character in the movie. Already making history during this awards season, Karla became the inaugural trans woman to claim the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Previously, the Academy awarded cisgender actors who played transgender roles, such as Jared Leto winning Best Supporting Actor for Dallas Buyers Club, Hilary Swank winning Best Actress for Boys Don’t Cry, and Eddie Redmayne winning Best Actor for The Danish Girl.
Emilia Pérez wasn’t halted by the rhythm of music or the flow of history. The film itself became a historical milestone, surpassing the records set by “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “Roma,” both non-English films that had 10 nominations each. It achieved this feat with an impressive 13 nominations.
History and music didn’t pause for Emilia Pérez; instead, the film itself etched its name into history as the most nominated non-English movie. Breaking the records set by “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “Roma,” both with 10 nominations apiece, it did so with a total of 13 nods.
The movie in Spanish, helmed by French film director Jacques Audiard, is a French entry to the Oscars. It boasts notable actresses like Zoe Saldaña (nominated for Best Actress) and Selena Gomez among its star-studded cast.
A remarkable actress named Fernanda Torres made history as she was the second Brazilian actress to receive a nomination in the Best Actress category. At 59 years old, she continues the legacy of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was the first Brazilian woman to be nominated in this category in 1998 for her role in Walter Salles’ film “Central Station.
Currently, Timothée Chalamet, aged 29, is a strong contender for making history as the youngest winner ever in the Best Actor category. This record was previously held by Adrien Brody, who won in 2002 at the age of 29 for his role in “The Pianist.” Chalamet has been nominated this year for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” and could potentially claim the award.
As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the remarkable Cynthia Erivo has earned her second Best Actress nomination for “Wicked,” making her history as one of only two Black women ever nominated in this category more than once. Previously, she was recognized for her exceptional performance in “Harriet.” Before her, the trailblazing Viola Davis made history with her nominations for “The Help” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” becoming the first (and to date, only) Black woman to achieve this milestone.
Additionally, we have “The Substance,” a movie featuring Demi Moore, that surprisingly earned a nomination as one of only seven horror films ever considered for the prestigious Best Picture award.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be hosted by Conan O’Brien, and will air March 2.
Keep reading to see all of the snubs and surprises from this year’s nominations…
Despite Emilia Pérez, also known as Jessi Del Monte, receiving favorable reviews for her performances and even being nominated for a Golden Globe, she was not included in the list of nominees for the category of Best Supporting Actress.
One who did find themselves on the coveted list was Monica Barbaro.
Monica’s nomination for her role as Joan Baez in “A Complete Unknown” caught us off guard because she wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe this year. However, her performance was recognized with a nomination for the 2025 SAG Awards instead.
In contrast, although Maria featured Angelina in her first significant part since “The Eternals” in 2021, and Angelina was even nominated for a Golden Globe, she did not receive an Oscar nomination.
It won’t shock you to hear they were nominated, but what could catch your attention is the fact that these long-standing Hollywood professionals are receiving their first ever Academy Award nomination this year.
Notable personalities who are celebrating their first nominations, despite established careers, include Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), and Brazil’s Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
Although Wicked achieved both commercial and critical success, earning a nomination for the director in the Directing category eluded the 45-year-old individual.
The fact that the horror movie starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which has received favorable reviews and even garnered a Best Picture nomination, isn’t entirely unexpected, doesn’t seem to break the usual pattern where horror films are typically overlooked in the top category.
In the same cinematic genre, several past movies that received a Best Picture nomination include “Get Out”, “The Silence of the Lambs”, “The Sixth Sense”, and “The Exorcist”.
Although the actress famed for “Babygirl” (with five Academy Award nominations in total) received recognition at the Golden Globe Awards, she missed out on a nomination for this year’s Oscars.
Despite the tennis-focused movie featuring stars like Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor failing to secure any Oscar nominations, one of the most unexpected categories where it didn’t make a mark was for the Original Score.
Indeed, the electronic, heavily bass-driven soundtrack took on a life of its own within the movie, setting it apart as one of the standout original scores from the previous year.
Attentive viewers might have spotted that for some movie titles, it was indicated as yet undecided who the nominees would be.
According to the Academy’s guidelines, a producer must first be deemed eligible by the Producers Guild of America. As a result, the names of some nominees have yet to be officially confirmed.
The announcements, coming in early February, therefore promise to be a surprise for all.
In the movie “The Last Showgirl”, the 57-year-old actress, Pamela, delivered a praised performance that even garnered a Golden Globe nomination. However, both Pamela and the entire film, alongside her fellow cast member Jamie Lee Curtis, were unfortunately not recognized with an Oscar nomination.
Absolutely, it’s true that the actress from “The Mindy Project” is involved with Anuja, who was nominated for a Live Action Short Film, as she assisted in producing the project.
