In an article by The Hollywood Reporter about Marvel’s upcoming movie, Captain America: Brave New World, it has been disclosed that its production budget is surprisingly lower than many would anticipate. Hidden within the piece discussing the movie’s early earnings predictions is a remark indicating that Brave New World will cost approximately $180 million, which is less than most other Marvel films. Comparatively, Brave New World is slightly pricier than Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), with a budget between $170 and $177 million. Captain America: Civil War, however, had a significantly larger budget of $250 million, reflecting the movie’s extensive cast featuring numerous Avengers characters.
In theaters on Valentine’s Day, the new Captain America movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” starring Anthony Mackie as the lead character for the first time on the big screen, is projected to generate at least $90 million or more in its opening weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this anticipated sequel’s estimated earnings align with initial projections of between $86 and $95 million. It’s expected that “Brave New World” will surpass the $100 million mark during the extended Presidents’ Day holiday weekend.
180 million dollars might not seem like chump change, but it’s relatively modest when compared to Marvel Studios’ usual spending. Lately, their projects have been quite pricey; for instance, the upcoming “The Marvels” is said to have a budget over 270 million, and even the TV show “Secret Invasion” cost around 212 million. It’s not uncommon for Marvel movies to have budgets exceeding 200 million dollars, as demonstrated by “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (with a budget of approximately 200-250 million), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (250 million), and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (also 200 million).
Occasionally, Marvel movies surpass the $300 million mark in production costs, not only for Avengers films but also for others. For instance, Disney spent $350.6 million on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and $330.1 million on Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The last Marvel Cinematic Universe film with a budget below $200 million was 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which cost $160 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is said to have been produced within a budget of around $150-$200 million.
In the upcoming movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” its lower budget could actually work to its advantage in terms of commercial success. It doesn’t need to earn as much as other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions to make a profit. Additionally, being the shortest Captain America film means more daily screenings for theaters, increasing its potential revenue. With less competition at the box office when it releases in a few weeks, “Brave New World” appears to be well-positioned for a profitable theater run, adding to Marvel’s ongoing success following the successful comeback of “Deadpool & Wolverine” last year.
It’s intriguing to find out how much each movie in the Multiverse Saga will cost. Given that some recent MCU releases like “The Marvels” didn’t perform as well as anticipated, it seems plausible that Disney and Marvel might be trying to reduce costs. However, high-profile films like “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” may require a larger budget. Nonetheless, the studio doesn’t always need to spend exorbitant amounts to produce these blockbusters. The production of “Captain America: Brave New World” demonstrates this, as it offers plenty of superhero action and Red Hulk scenes, without the $180 million budget affecting the filmmakers in any significant way.
