Among the announcements made during today’s Xbox Developer Direct event, the unexpected return of Ninja Gaiden stood out. Not only was a new installment, Ninja Gaiden 4, confirmed, but there was also an eleventh-hour announcement of a remastered version of the second title, titled Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. This unexpectedly launched today, giving gamers an immediate opportunity to play it. However, there’s one significant drawback that has stirred some controversy among those eager to revisit Ryu Hayabusa’s swift-moving adventures: unfortunately, the remaster is only available for Xbox Game Pass members at this time.
In contrast to the original Ninja Gaiden 2, which was a mere 7GB download back in 2008 for Xbox 360, the latest version of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black on Xbox Series X|S is surprisingly large at approximately 85.99GBs – significantly larger than typical Ninja Gaiden games that usually take up around 4GBs. Even the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection from 2021, containing three series entries, was only about 14GBs in size.
Regarding the size of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, many are puzzled by its substantial file size. Some have expressed strong opinions about it, with one user on X (previously Twitter) stating, “Ninja Gaiden II on the X360 is just 7 gigabytes, I can’t comprehend how badly one needs to mess up to make a 17-year-old game take up so much space. For your information, Nioh 2, another title from Team Ninja, requires only 79 gigabytes.” Interestingly, Nioh 2, another Team Ninja game, was released in 2020, over a decade after Ninja Gaiden 2 became available.
As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but share my own thoughts about the recent game download on platform X. Frankly, I was taken aback when I saw that it clocked in at a whopping 81GB! Don’t get me wrong; I understand that high-quality games often require substantial storage space. However, when I compare it to other titles like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Devil May Cry V, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengance, which are around 12GB, 35GB, and 8GB respectively, it feels somewhat out of the ordinary. Of course, for those with faster Wi-Fi speeds, download times may not be an issue, but for many of us, it’s still a significant chunk of data to manage.
It’s worth mentioning that the large file size of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black might be due to its graphical update using Unreal Engine 5, enhanced textures, and other improvements. Given this, we can expect a download size exceeding expectations for Ninja Gaiden 4, as it’s also built with Unreal Engine 5 and is a new title in the series. The iconic character Rya Hayabusa, along with newcomer Yakumo, will lead the upcoming installment of the franchise, which hasn’t had a new release in over a decade. Known as the Year of the Ninja by the developer, it may start off slowly depending on your download speed, but it promises to deliver the gory splendor of Ninja Gaiden before Ninja Gaiden 4 is released in Fall 2025.
