As a gamer, I’ve been riding high on anticipation after hearing all the positive buzz surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows. But today, Ubisoft dropped a story trailer for this game on PS5 that’s left me reeling! Despite some initial doubts about my excitement level, this trailer has reignited the fire within me.
In the notorious Iga province during 1579, a time when the art of ninjutsu was revered, I found myself immersed in a tale reminiscent of many games set in that era. The storyline revolves around the unification conquests of the historical daimyo, Oda Nobunaga – a pivotal event in feudal Japan’s history. Amidst this dramatic setting, I step into the shoes of a young ninja who undertakes what appears to be an insurmountable mission, leading her down a path destined for confrontation with a legendary samurai serving under the “Demon King of Owari.

Instead of avoiding the topic, the captivating tale of Yasuke, an African slave who became a samurai retainer in Japan under the service of Nobunaga, will be the main focus. Given its historical and geographical isolation, this was indeed a remarkable position in Japan. For the sake of clarity, it’s worth noting that while “samurai” and “retainer” (family servant) may seem distinct, they were often used interchangeably in feudal texts, much like European knights who held lands and titles were also considered retainers.
