Wallace & Gromit SMASHES Gavin & Stacey in Shocking Ratings Upset

It appears that among this year’s new releases, Gavin & Stacey: The Finale and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl are two of the most eagerly awaited productions, and they seem to have achieved a significant landmark.

In just 28 days, the last episode of Gavin & Stacey drew in 20.9 million viewers, an impressive figure indeed. However, the anticipated Wallace & Gromit movie surpassed this comedy by a notable gap, having garnered no less than 21.6 million viewers already.

Based on BBC reports, these Christmas Day viewings mark a phenomenon not observed for two decades, making them the United Kingdom’s highest-rated scripted and animated series since record-keeping started in 2002.

Upon revealing the numbers, Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s head of content, expressed her delight, stating, “The numbers surpass all predictions; achieving more than 20 million is a truly remarkable landmark for the year 2025.

These two classic British series might seem disparate, yet they share a common trait – exceptional quality that sets them apart as the cream of the crop.

I am deeply impressed by the incredible creativity of Aardman, Nick Park, Merlin Crossingham, Ruth Jones, and James Corden. I take great pride in our long-lasting bond with them. It’s been an honor to assist their extraordinary artistic abilities for many years.

Aardman Animations’ Nick Park and Merlin Crossingham expressed their heartfelt gratitude and astonishment: “Wow, we can’t believe it! These incredible viewership numbers have left us speechless. It’s absolutely amazing to know that our clay characters resonate so deeply with viewers on BBC – this is the most delightful feeling of all!

In a similar vein, Ruth Jones and James Corden, creators and writers of Gavin & Stacey, stated: “It’s truly remarkable what the BBC has accomplished by attracting such large viewership on Christmas Day. We feel incredibly proud to have contributed to it.

Earlier, it had been revealed that Gavin & Stacey and Wallace & Gromit were among the top rated Christmas television programs for the entire year.

In the week following its debut, more than 19 million viewers tuned in to watch the final episode of Gavin & Stacey, compared to over 16 million who watched Wallace & Gromit.

The aforementioned statistics emerged following the BBC’s confirmation that Gavin & Stacey’s final episode was the highest-rated scripted program on any channel or streaming platform in the UK, according to records kept since 2002.

The viewership numbers for that performance surpassed the series’ record set during its 2019 Christmas special, which attracted 18.5 million viewers within a span of 28 days.
