Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are seeking accountability.
Following the devastating wildfires in Pacific Palisades, which unfortunately also destroyed their home and many others in Los Angeles, the couple has decided to file a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The reason being, they claim that LADWP’s management of its water supply significantly contributed to their losses. This allegation is outlined in court documents that People has acquired.
According to the report, the couple claims they’ve incurred expenses for property repairs, lost the pleasure of using their properties, and suffered losses related to wages and potential future earnings. Heidi and Spencer are filing a lawsuit without specifying the exact amount they’re seeking, but they also want the court to cover their legal fees and grant them a jury trial.
According to the plaintiffs, which include alumni from Hills, Janet Pratt (Spencer’s mother), and William Pratt, they claim in a lawsuit filed on January 21st in Los Angeles County’s Superior Court that the Pacific Palisades fire was a direct result of how the city and LADWP handled water management in the region. In simpler terms, they argue that the fire was an inevitable and unavoidable outcome due to the way water supply was managed in that area.
As reported by People, the lawsuit points out that the Santa Ynez Reservoir was not functioning since February 2024, had been drained before the January 2025 fires broke out, and was undergoing maintenance on its floating roof at that time.
The legal action alleges that due to the Santa Ynez Reservoir being non-operational, fire hydrants in Pacific Palisades malfunctioned following the depletion of three water tanks, each containing a million gallons, over a 12-hour period.
Additionally, it references Gus Corona, the former business representative of IBEW Local 18 (the labor union for the LADWP employees), who had earlier voiced his concerns about the management of the reservoir in the past.
He stated to The Los Angeles Times, as mentioned in an article published on January 10, the lawsuit highlights that it was inexcusable for the reservoir to be empty for nearly a year due to minor repairs. In his opinion, such work should have been handled internally instead of relying on an external contractor, and he strongly feels it could have been prevented.
As reported by People magazine, the LADWP claimed they left the reservoir vacant for about a year to find an external contractor for repairs, rather than using their own staff.
The lawsuit brought forth by Spencer and Heidi further asserts that the reservoir was constructed for public usage, thus its water pressure is inadequate to combat wildfires. Essentially, they argue that the defendants intentionally designed and maintained this water supply system in such a manner, even though Los Angeles is situated in an area known for its susceptibility to fires.
TopMob News has reached out to the LADWP and Spencer’s rep for comment but has not yet heard back.
