In an interview with GamesRadar, Jonathan Dumont, creative director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, shared that the development team opted for a more streamlined open-world design in the upcoming title, featuring less crowded spaces compared to past games in the series. Dumont mentioned that their trip to Japan, where they researched for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, influenced this decision and altered their approach towards game development.
As a gamer, stepping into a new virtual world is always an adventure where I find myself uttering “Wow, this is unexpected!” It’s not just the vastness of the forest or the towering trees, but the intricate layering of miniature mountains that form overlapping views – something we don’t often encounter in our usual gaming landscapes.
Dumont emphasizes the importance of creating a detailed and authentic world, even when it comes to smaller details, due to his shifted perspective after personally visiting a Japanese castle fortress.
As a gamer, let me tell you, the grandeur of those castles took me by surprise! I mean, I knew they were big, but standing there, it was like a whole new level of awe-inspiring. It made me realize that we needed to be more precise with the scale in our game to truly capture their majesty.
Due to this, the studio is focusing on creating an experience where players will have a comparable sense of wonder. This can best be done by avoiding an excessive number of new attractions that might distract them.
Dumont explained that the travel time may vary slightly due to the expansion of more open and natural landscapes. This means it might take a bit longer to reach destinations, but when you arrive, there’s much more to explore. The scale ratio has been adjusted from Odyssey and previous projects, and they are putting extra effort into making the environment incredibly detailed and immersive.
Following several setbacks, the anticipated release date for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” has been confirmed as March 20th. Game director Charles Benoit shared that during this delay, the development team isn’t focusing on revamping the game’s primary functions. Instead, they are using the additional time to refine and enhance the existing features of the game.
Furthermore, Benoit highlighted that refining the parkour system is a significant focus in the upcoming game. Given the intricate rooftops of Feudal Japan’s structures, which are more complex than previous locations in the franchise, additional effort was put into ensuring that characters Naoe and Yasuke can smoothly navigate these buildings without appearing clumsy during their runs.
The action-adventure game “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-purchasing the game will grant players access to the “Claws of Awaji” DLC, offering an extra 10 hours of gameplay with a fresh zone and new gear to discover. The DLC is scheduled for release towards the end of the year.
