A trustworthy source within Marvel Studios is said to be revealing that a fresh Avengers video game is being developed. Marvel has been a significant influence in pop culture for almost two decades due to its extensive success in Hollywood through the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While it started with films like Blade in 1998, X-Men in 2000, and Spider-Man in 2002, it was Iron Man that truly revolutionized things. The introduction of an interconnected universe on the big screen brought together many beloved comic book characters, fulfilling every nerd’s dream. However, it took Marvel some time to understand that its video games didn’t need to be mere tie-ins to the MCU. Instead, they needed to create standalone games capable of achieving success independently.
The progression of excellent single-player Marvel games began in 2018 with Marvel’s Spider-Man for PlayStation, followed by titles like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There are several more to come, including Marvel’s Wolverine, new Black Panther and Captain America games, and a fresh Iron Man game from EA. Unfortunately, Marvel faced a significant setback with one of its most anticipated releases: Marvel’s Avengers. Launched in 2020, the game didn’t fare well due to technical issues at launch, unnecessary live service components, and an inability to regularly provide engaging content updates. This was a significant letdown for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but Marvel is determined to rectify the situation.
Marvel Leaker Claims New Avengers Game Is in Development
It’s been confirmed by Marvel insider DanielRPK on his Patreon that a new Avengers video game is in production, distinct from “Marvel’s Avengers.” Despite the absence of information about the developer or publisher, it appears Square Enix may not be involved due to issues with their previous Marvel project, “Marvel’s Avengers.” Both “Guardians of the Galaxy” and this new title saw mixed success in commercial terms. Given the success Sony Interactive Entertainment has achieved with Spider-Man, speculation arises about PlayStation studios possibly handling the Avengers game. However, Xbox is also working on a Blade game. Many prominent studios could potentially develop this project.
In essence, it’s uncertain if the upcoming Avengers game will link with other Marvel games. In 2022, Marvel Games VP Bill Rosemann mentioned to ComicBook that developers are not compelled to interconnect their games as part of a unified universe. Instead, they have the freedom to destroy planets like the moon without affecting another game’s narrative. However, the multiverse concept offers potential for merging different studios’ takes on characters such as Iron Man and Black Panther with Spider-Man (from EA and PlayStation respectively). Coordinating the continuity of numerous games across multiple studios could be challenging, but the Avengers project is undeniably ambitious.
Back in the 2010s, THQ was developing an Avengers video game centered around a battle between the heroes and the Skrulls, based on the “Secret Invasion” comic storyline. This first-person action game was initially intended to launch alongside the movie “The Avengers” in the summer of 2012; however, it had no direct connection with that film. The game was designed for four-player cooperation and featured Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor as playable characters, with plans to introduce Black Widow, Ant-Man, and the Fantastic Four as optional characters or non-playable characters (NPCs) later on. Regrettably, THQ encountered financial difficulties during development and requested Marvel’s assistance in funding the project. Instead, the game was ultimately canceled.
Over the years, creating an excellent AAA video game featuring the Avengers has been quite challenging. There’s much we can glean from these past attempts, and superhero games have significantly improved over the last ten years. Here’s hoping that the team tasked with bringing the Avengers to life this time around will successfully deliver a satisfying experience.
