The music world has lost a star.
Atlanta-born rap artist DJ Unk, famous for his 2006 chart-topper “Walk It Out,” passed away at the age of 43, as confirmed by his relatives and peers.
In a heartfelt Facebook post on January 24th, Sherkita Long-Platt, who was married to the late musician known as Anthony Leonard Platt, shared her grief. “My husband is no longer with us, and our children have lost their father,” she wrote. “Our lives will never be the same. I love you, Anthony, forever.
She requested that people show understanding and kindness towards her and her family, as they navigate through this challenging time.
No cause of death was revealed.
The record label run by fellow rapper Korey “Big Oomp” Robinson, Big Oomp Records, which signed DJ Unk in 2000 and released popular tracks like “Walk It Out” and “2 Step”, as well as other songs, also honored the deceased artist.
With deep regret and heartfelt sorrow, we share the news of the passing of an iconic figure in Atlanta, Anthony Platt, more famously known as “DJ Unk.” Beyond being a legendary DJ, rapper, and producer, he was a pivotal member of our label, and the impact he made globally will be treasured eternally.
The statement went on to say, “Tunes like ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have made a permanent impact on the music world, and his influence is expected to motivate musicians, DJs, and fans for many years ahead. His vibrant spirit, innovative ideas, and dedication to his craft will always be cherished.
Over the past ten years, the rapper has mostly stayed out of the public eye following rumors of a heart attack in 2009.
In a 2010 interview with XXL, Unk stated that he had been dealing with health problems due to poor dietary choices and neglecting self-care. He emphasized the need to prioritize his health not only for himself, but also for his family – his children and his wife.
The rapper elaborated, “The root causes are lack of physical activity and poor diet. Essentially, I’m always hustling. Each day I strive to create opportunities for my home. I’m constantly traveling, dealing with various climates, and it all added up. It was the stress that got to me.
Instead of feeling “blessed” to be occupied with his concerts, Unk opted to focus on his well-being by reducing his alcohol consumption and quitting smoking as well.
As I step out, I still revel in life’s joys much as I used to. Nowadays, I might indulge in a beverage or two before making my way to perform, but I’ve dialed back the excesses of the past.
He also turned to his faith during the challenging time.
Things moved incredibly swiftly, and unlike my previous routine, I now find myself praying not just once but twice daily,” Unk remarked, expressing gratitude. “I consider this experience a true blessing.
