Daredevil’s Controversial 90s Costume Makes a Shocking Comeback!

Over time, Marvel has given its superheroes numerous wardrobe updates, but one of the most contentious changes was for Daredevil, also known as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. In 1993, Marvel introduced a sleek black armored suit for Daredevil, which sparked much debate and is still considered his most divisive costume to this day. However, as appreciation for the ’90s grows, more fans have come to embrace this controversial outfit. Now, Marvel plans to reintroduce this costume once again in a new series.

This time, instead of a limited series or a temporal excursion, Saladin Ahmed and Jose Luis Soares are planning to bring back the black armor in the primary Daredevil series, commencing with issue #20 in April. Take a peek at the costume’s comeback on the variant cover below from Philip Tan. You’ll find the official description below as well.

In issue #20 of Daredevil, written by Saladin Ahmed and illustrated by José Luis Soares (released in April), Daredevil dons his classic black armor to confront a fresh adversary. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock seeks solace in the embrace of an old love interest. Don’t miss it on Philip Tan’s variant cover!

Issue #20 of Daredevil, penned by Saladin Ahmed and illustrated by José Luis Soares, with a cover by John Romita Jr. There’s also a variant cover designed by Philip Tan available. The comic goes on sale on April 9th.

The costume first appeared in issue #321 of Daredevil, during the writing partnership of D.G. Chichester and Scott McDaniels. Although it was initially introduced as part of the “Fall From Grace” storyline, it continued to be featured for some time afterwards. In 2023, Marvel decided to reintroduce both the costume and the stories from that period with the miniseries “Daredevil: Black Armor,” and Chichester was overjoyed at the opportunity to revisit that era.

If someone had mentioned earlier that I’d get another opportunity to wear Daredevil’s horns, let alone horns connected to a suit of black armor, I would have assumed they were not in their right mind after being hit too hard with a baton. However, it seems my passport to Hell’s Kitchen is still valid! Chichester shared with Marvel.com. It’s an exciting (and delightful!) surprise to return to Matt Murdock’s neighborhood, and to collaborate with Marvel again as we delve into the past to uncover a fresh adventure for the fearless man.

The workplace of Daredevil has been incredibly supportive as we’ve dared to try some bold moves with this series,” Chichester added. “Coming back to Matt Murdock, Daredevil, and his iconic suit – as the writer I am now – has been an extraordinary journey. It’s like learning how to jump off a rooftop, not knowing exactly where you’ll end up. I hope fans of my ‘Fall From Grace’ and ‘Fall of the Kingpin’ tales will find even more to appreciate in my interpretation of heightened senses and intense action – especially presented in a fresh, innovative way thanks to the fantastic artwork and visual storytelling of Netho Diaz and JP Mayer.

With the costume making a comeback in the current time, it remains to be discovered how fans will respond. The ’90s nostalgia wave is certainly upon us, and we’ve seen some successful revivals so far. It might be that the black armor becomes another example of this trend when it debuts later this year.
