Jaime Winstone is to reprise her role as a young Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders.
The BBC One soap opera is showcasing the comeback of characters from last year’s flashback episode, with a focus this time on stories involving the Mitchell family, taking us back to 1985.
In a narrative focusing on Phil Mitchell’s mental health struggles, portrayed by Steve McFadden, the character will encounter hallucinations that transport him back to his teenage years as he grapples with psychosis during his psychological deterioration. The plotline will also depict him making an attempt to take his own life.
In the upcoming sequences, Winstone is set to portray a younger Peggy Mitchell once more. Additionally, original cast members will make a comeback: George Russo takes on the role of her abusive spouse Eric Mitchell, Daniel Delaney embodies a teenaged Phil Mitchell, and Teddy Jay appears as Phil’s younger brother Grant Mitchell.
Beyond the 2022 Mitchell series spin-off, actor Sam Miles has landed a role as a youthful character named Nigel Bates, who was friends with the Mitchell Brothers during their childhood.
Actor Paul Bradley has taken up his character, Nigel, from December 24th onwards. This character is currently involved in a narrative focusing on early-onset dementia.
Upon rejoining BBC One’s soap opera, Jaime Winstone expressed: “It was incredibly gratifying to be asked back to portray Peggy Mitchell once more; she is the ideal role for me. To play a part in this legendary family during such an impactful storyline has been a deeply moving and delightful experience. I sincerely hope that I’ve done her character justice.
“Thank you to all the EastEnders family, this has been such a wonderful experience.”
Indeed, the character of Peggy Mitchell was initially portrayed by actress Jo Warne as a temporary cast member back in 1991. Later on, from 1994 up until her death in 2016, the renowned Dame Barbara Windsor took over the role, appearing in various episodes throughout those years.
Chris Clenshaw, the executive producer, commented on the narrative progression, saying, “It’s a delight to have the young Mitchells rejoin us for these exclusive sequences as we approach our 40th anniversary week.
In 2022, both fans and critics acclaimed Jaime’s portrayal of Peggy. With Phil’s storyline unfolding, it seems fitting for her to return to the iconic role in 20XX, joined once more by George, Daniel, Teddy, and a new addition, Sam, playing young Nigel.
These flashbacks offer an exceptional chance for viewers to delve deeper into Philip’s state of mind, grasping more clearly the harrowing experiences that pushed him towards a mental health predicament.
EastEnders collaborates closely with organizations such as The Samaritans, Rethink Mental Illness, and Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) in an effort to depict stories about mental health issues with care and precision.
As we approach the 40th anniversary, there will be a significant spotlight on the Mitchell family, with Ross Kemp reprising his character as present-day Grant Mitchell. Simultaneously, Billy (Perry Fenwick) and Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton) are planning to get remarried on the very day of the anniversary.
