At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the Lenovo Legion Go S generated quite a buzz, particularly due to its SteamOS-powered variant. The specific release details have been somewhat unclear, but here’s an exciting piece of news: You now have the opportunity to reserve your unit ahead of launch by placing a pre-order!
In the United States, Lenovo’s official store hasn’t launched its listing yet, but you can still pre-order through Best Buy. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Lenovo and Currys are accepting pre-orders, although the availability details are inconsistent across both countries.
Here’s what you need to know.
Where to pre-order a Lenovo Legion Go S in the United States
Currently, there’s just one product available for pre-purchase at Best Buy, and that’s the AMD Z2 Go. This model is exclusive to the Legion Go S, comes with 32GB of RAM, and offers 1TB of storage.
Where to pre-order a Lenovo Legion Go S in the UK
At the moment, there are two choices for pre-ordering the Legion Go S in the UK: one can be arranged directly through Lenovo, or you could opt for a more affordable option offered by Currys.
Should you buy a Lenovo Legion Go S right now?
It’s clear that the Lenovo Legion Go S will likely be a top-notch item, as our brief encounter with it at CES has left us confident about this. However, it’s important to ponder over a few aspects before making a pre-order decision.
- If you’re more interested in the SteamOS version of the Legion Go S, then you’ll be waiting a while longer. While Valve has said it will start making the OS available to other handhelds starting in April, we’re not currently expecting the preloaded Legion Go S to arrive until May.
- These pre-orders are all for the AMD Z2 Go version, not ones based on the familiar AMD Z1 Extreme. We don’t have any detailed experience yet on how good the Z2 Go is, but on paper alone it seems like it’s the weaker of the two. Its CPU only has four cores, versus eight, and the GPU is based on AMD’s older RDNA 2, versus RDNA 3 in the Z1 Extreme.
The AMD-powered Legion Go S (Z2 Go) appears to be a natural evolution of the Steam Deck. Although both share a similar 4-core CPU setup, the Steam Deck utilizes an older Zen 2 architecture compared to the Z2 Go’s Zen 3+ CPU. Interestingly, while they differ in terms of CPUs, they use the same architecture for their GPUs as the Steam Deck.
Based on the Steam Deck’s performance, the Legion Go S with the AMD Z2 Go can deliver a reliable gaming experience. However, for top-tier performance, it would be wise to wait for the Z1 Extreme version or even the upcoming Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2, which will feature both the AMD Z2 and Z2 Extreme processors.
