Nearly eight years have passed since “The Vampire Diaries” concluded its eight-season stint on The CW. During this time, viewers were treated not only to the intricate love triangle between Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore Brothers, Stefan and Damon, but also an expansive cast of characters, some of whom later starred in their own spinoff series, such as “The Originals” and its successor, “Legacies”. One particularly outstanding character introduced within this franchise is undoubtedly Klaus Mikaelson.
In the TV series “The Vampire Diaries,” Klaus, played by Joseph Morgan, debuted in Season 2 and was swiftly positioned as the primary antagonist. However, this vampire-werewolf hybrid (one of the Original vampires) developed into a far more compassionate character over time. As viewers delved deeper into his past, they discovered emotional scars resulting from a lifetime of rejection and hardship stemming from his origins. Despite his frequent monstrous behavior, Klaus was not devoid of the potential for redemption. Fans adored this complex portrayal. But even though Klaus quickly became a beloved villain that fans loved to root for, the original plan for Season 3 was to culminate in a showdown that would have taken his life. However, due to popular demand, Klaus was spared and continued to captivate audiences.
What Happened in Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries?
In the third season of “The Vampire Diaries”, Klaus transforms fully into a menacing villain, causing havoc in Mystic Falls. He poses a significant danger to all, regardless if they are human, vampire, or werewolf. As such a threat, Elena and her companions spend the season trying to devise a plan to permanently eliminate him. They discover that Klaus and his sister Rebekah are fleeing from their father Mikael. Throughout the season, Elena’s group uncovers methods to incapacitate an Original vampire, ultimately setting into motion a strategy to take down Klaus for good.
In the end, the heroes manage to overpower Klaus, but they can’t take his life since they find out that slaying an Original vampire would mean the extinction of every vampire connected to him – encompassing Elena, Stefan, Damon, and Caroline as well because they were part of his extended line. As a result, Bonnie prevents Klaus’s demise, and in Season 4, he is no longer the main antagonist.
Why Didn’t Klaus Die?
Initially, Series co-creator Julie Plec intended Klaus to simply serve as the main antagonist in Season 3, with the plan being that our heroes would triumph over him after a tough year of battle, effectively ending his character. However, the captivating portrayal by actor Joseph Morgan brought such depth and complexity to Klaus that he became too compelling to be written off.
In an interview with TVLine in 2012, Plec said, “When you have actors as talented as [Morgan], who leave a unique impact on their roles, you need to adapt your storytelling to accommodate that.” He further explained that around the midpoint of Season 3, the team collectively felt there was more to explore with Klaus, or Joseph, and decided not to let them go.
In the end, it was Klaus’s powerful act and adored persona that prevented his initial doom, which is fortunate because it became challenging to envision The Vampire Diaries without him later on. This is especially true given that his narrative developed into a beloved romantic relationship between the Original Vampire and Caroline, which still resonates with fans today.
Klaus Did Ultimately Meet the Final Death — But On His Own Terms
In the show “The Originals,” Klaus manages to make it through Season 3 and subsequently relocates to New Orleans. The series spans over five seasons, where Klaus endeavors to regain control of the city amidst an escalating conflict among vampires, werewolves, and witches. It’s filled with family turmoil, the birth of his daughter, Hope (a tribrid), and even Nazi vampires at one point. The series finale sees Klaus selflessly giving up his life for his daughter by taking the Hollow – an ancient powerful witch’s spirit – into himself, bidding farewell to his loved ones, and meeting his end when he and his brother, Elijah, are fatally stabbed with white oak stakes in the streets of New Orleans. In the finale of “Legacies,” it is disclosed that Klaus has ultimately found tranquility. This seems a fitting conclusion for a character who started as a villain but transformed into a hero, keeping audiences captivated season after season.
Currently, you can stream “The Vampire Diaries” on both Peacock and Max. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in “The Originals,” it’s accessible through Amazon Prime Video. Lastly, for those who prefer “Legacies,” you’ll find it streaming on Netflix.
