The much-awaited return of Marvel’s Daredevil experienced a major change during production, as Charlie Cox, the main actor, disclosed that the studio decided to substantially alter the series to make it more in line with its popular Netflix predecessor, Daredevil. This adjustment was made for Daredevil: Born Again after filming had already started, leading to a comprehensive creative overhaul involving new showrunners, a revamped pilot episode, and a renewed commitment to the original series’ style.
Production on the series started back in 2023, but was temporarily stopped due to labor disputes within the industry. When it was time to resume filming, Marvel decided to switch out the original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord with experienced writer Dario Scardapane from “The Punisher”. In an interview with SFX magazine, the new showrunner mentioned that although the initial footage had some promising aspects, it didn’t align with the established character of Daredevil.
According to JoBlo’s report, the original idea for the show was to have a lighter tone and a more episodic structure, making it similar to a courtroom drama. However, Scardapane changed the direction and moved towards an action-based New York crime story instead. This way, the series could preserve the essence of the previous Netflix show while also advancing the plot.
Cox, playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil, shared with SFX that there was a change of direction following the series, which initially was intriguing and appropriate. He expressed that the debate was about not simply repeating the past if they were to return after such a long time. Marvel realized that the episodes as they stood weren’t quite fitting the bill.
By making this innovative shift, Marvel demonstrates their dedication to preserving the essence of the initial series, all while weaving its narrative into the larger tapestry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Given what a Herculean task that was, it’s very impressive what they achieved,” Cox said.
In a new twist, the updated series follows on directly from where the Netflix show left off, happening five years later. As per Scardapane’s explanation, this means it resumes from the dream that Foggy, Karen, and Matt experienced at the conclusion of the series.
At the closing moments of the Netflix series, it was noted that Foggy, Karen, and Matt had a vision sketched on the reverse side of a napkin – Scardapane mentioned this. The narrative commences with this vision. It’s not a complex dream; instead, it portrays three amicable companions joining forces in business.
The upcoming nine-episode television show, set to debut on March 4th in the US and March 5th in the UK, has built enough excitement that work on a second season might start before the first one even broadcasts. This series brings back familiar faces such as Vincent D’Onofrio portraying Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Elden Henson playing Foggy Nelson, and Deborah Ann Woll depicting Karen Page.
