The 1997 film “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” a sequel to “Jurassic Park” and an adaptation of Michael Crichton’s novel, presents a lingering mystery that enthusiasts of the franchise are eagerly trying to unravel. In this movie, InGen manages to capture a T-Rex from Isla Sorna (also known as Site B) and transports it to San Diego with the aim of rebuilding the park within the city. However, the manner in which the T-Rex breaks free and wreaks havoc through San Diego remains a source of confusion among fans.
InGen transported a T-Rex to San Diego via a cargo ship, but the vessel collided with the dock, leaving the entire crew scattered and brutally killed throughout the ship. Yet, due to the T-Rex’s massive size, it seems unlikely that it could have reached many parts of the ship, including the main bridge, at the time of the crash, as it was still confined within the cargo bay. Consequently, fans of Jurassic Park are left puzzled about the crew’s fate, a mystery that has resurfaced once more on the official Jurassic Park reddit forum.
Fans of Jurassic Park have put forward an intriguing hypothesis regarding the fate of the InGen ship’s crew. They suggest that the crew was wiped out by a group of Velociraptors, which sneaked aboard the ship before it departed Isla Sorna. The raptors, according to this theory, then systematically eliminated the crew members. Afterward, the raptors likely found themselves in the cargo bay and were ultimately killed by the T-Rex. Eventually, the damaged cargo ship drifted towards InGen’s San Diego pier, causing it to crash.
In “The Lost World,” the demise of the InGen ship crew is left unexplained and seems to be an oversight. Although the T-Rex could potentially have been the one responsible, it would necessitate the T-Rex being loose on the ship at the exact moment of the crash, with crucial areas like the bridge showing signs of destruction to indicate that the T-Rex had aggressively pursued its prey into a confined space. Similarly, having the raptors as the killers could have made them more integral to “The Lost World”‘s narrative.
In “The Lost World” film, it’s noticeable that Velociraptors have a relatively small overall appearance compared to other dinosaurs. The raptors make their debut in the second act when the InGen team stumbles into a field of elephant grass on Isla Sorna, prompting the raptors to attack them one by one. Later, the raptors chase Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), his daughter Kelly (Vanessa Lee Chester), and Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) at an abandoned InGen facility. These scenes involving Velociraptors are thrilling in “The Lost World”, but they essentially cover the entirety of their involvement in the movie.
In the movies Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, Velociraptors are portrayed as the most intelligent dinosaurs. Including a scene where they overpowered the crew of the InGen ship would have given viewers more raptor action. Moreover, this scenario might help clarify a lingering plot issue in The Lost World, namely, who was responsible for the demise of the InGen ship’s crew. While it remains just a fan theory that Velociraptors took out the crew, it serves as an intriguing explanation, even if it’s only considered headcanon. Regardless, it leaves the Jurassic Park mystery surrounding the Lysine contingency for fans to continue debating and dissecting.
