Looks like Josh Brolin won’t be playing Clayface, after all.
By December 2024, it was officially confirmed by Deadline that a Clayface movie had been given the go-ahead at DC Studios. Known for directing “Doctor Sleep,” Mike Flanagan was revealed as the screenwriter. His vision for the film encompassed a blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy genres.
Matt Reeves, the director of “The Batman”, along with Lynn Harris, will take part in the production process via their own production company, known as “6th & Idaho Productions”.
As reported by Nexus Point News, specifics about the storyline are hard to come by. Yet, it’s expected that the movie will present a compassionate portrayal of Clayface’s character. Filming is set to commence in Spring 2025 with an anticipated release date in September 2026. Mike Flanagan has allegedly finished writing the script, but no director has been appointed as yet. Furthermore, there have been no formal announcements regarding casting for this film.
It has been speculated that Josh Brolin, famously recognized for his roles as Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cable in Deadpool 2, was under consideration to portray the shape-shifting Batman. Nevertheless, a source from Nexus Point News has refuted these rumors.
Actually, as I previously mentioned, it’s likely that the character will be portrayed by someone relatively new or fresh. At this point, they haven’t even begun the casting process, and won’t until a director is secured. The rumors about DC still considering Brolin for a role don’t necessarily mean he’ll be cast in the upcoming project; it just suggests that he remains on their radar.

The confidential source, referring to himself as the Apocalyptic Horseman, disclosed on X that “As I mentioned earlier, it’ll be someone quite young. They haven’t initiated the casting process yet, and they won’t until a director is appointed. There are rumors circulating that DC still has plans for Brolin to play a role in their upcoming project, leading many to speculate that he could be the one they start casting soon.
The choice to have a younger actor play the role indicates that the movie could be an origin tale about the Batman villain. It’s not uncommon for films about villains to be produced without their corresponding heroes; Sony Pictures is a prime example with its numerous Spider-Man-adjacent movies featuring no sign of Spider-Man himself. The film Joker also briefly touched upon Bruce Wayne’s origins, even though it focused mainly on the Joker.
Almost every movie from Sony’s collection featuring villains struggled financially, leading to the cancellation of their intended shared cinematic universe.
It appears that DC and Warner Bros., despite Sony’s past missteps, are venturing into another villain-focused production following the acclaim of The Penguin. While this show garnered numerous accolades and favorable feedback from viewers and critics alike, simply replicating the approach may not necessarily be a sound decision.
Recently, the only other live-action triumph DC achieved with Batman on TV was the series titled “Gotham”, which served as an origin story for Batman and his rogues’ gallery. Shows like “Pennyworth”, “Batwoman”, and “Gotham Knights”, following in its footsteps, didn’t fare nearly as well in terms of popularity.
In my opinion, I found myself somewhat disappointed with the trilogy of shows, largely because Batman was noticeably missing from the entire series. And let me tell you, the portrayal of Batwoman left much to be desired.
It’s uncertain whether the upcoming Clayface film will turn out to be a success or not, given the limited information available at present. The casting of Josh Brolin as Clayface hasn’t been confirmed yet, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of him appearing in the movie in another role.
