As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been absolutely thrilled over the past month with some unexpected treats gracing Netflix‘s streaming platform! A few weeks back, Netflix sneakily slipped in a host of blockbuster releases from Warner Bros., without even a whisper in their monthly newsletters. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, over the weekend, another surprise gem landed on Netflix – this time, one of the funniest and arguably best films of 2024!
The movie under discussion is titled “Saturday Night“, a fast-paced comedy directed by Jason Reitman that delves into the turbulent events preceding the debut episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975. Following its release in theaters back in October and a Blu-ray launch from Sony at the start of January, “Saturday Night” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
It wasn’t disclosed by Netflix when they would start streaming “Saturday Night,” but since Netflix holds a deal with Sony for exclusive streaming rights of all their theatrical releases, it was expected to show up eventually. The release dates aren’t announced in advance, though. This arrangement extends to upcoming Sony movies such as “Venom: The Last Dance,” “Kraven the Hunter,” and the recent hit comedy “One of Them Days.
The movie titled “Saturday Night” premiered in October to widespread acclaim from critics and enthusiastic reactions from audiences. The main attraction for the film, considering that Saturday Night Live is currently celebrating its 50th season, is its stellar cast. For the filmmakers led by Reitman, the task was immense: casting young actors to portray comedy legends like Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Andy Kaufman, Billy Crystal, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, and George Carlin.
In this movie, Gabriel LaBelle portrays Lorne Michaels, the inventor of Saturday Night Live who’s still at the helm today. The ensemble includes Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris (unrelated), Kim Matula as Jane Curtin, Nicholas Braun as Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson, Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol, Andrew Barth Feldman as Neil Levy, Tommy Dewey as Michael O’Donoghue, Nicholas Podany as Billy Crystal, Jon Batiste as Billy Preston, Willem Dafoe as Dave Tebet, Matthew Rhys as George Carlin, and J.K. Simmons as Milton Berle.
