2024 saw the sales of boxed video games in the United States reach a record low not seen in more than 25 years, as reported by the market research firm Circana.
Based on the available information, it appears that the income from physical software sales has dropped significantly since 2021, currently sitting at approximately 85% less than its highest point in 2008.
It’s quite clear that there’s been a gradual shift in people’s purchasing patterns, moving more toward digital products over physical ones. This trend is largely influenced by several aspects: affordability, ease of use, accessibility, and arguably, most significantly, the impact of the pandemic.
The striking figures clearly demonstrate the reason behind Sony’s decision to forgo the disc drive in the PS5 Pro model. As per analyst Mat Piscatella, nearly half (49%) of all PS5 consoles sold in the US last year were of the non-disc drive variety.
It’s important to note that digital games aren’t replacing traditional ones entirely. Sony continues to manufacture physical versions of their main releases, and in certain areas, the demand for physical games from consumers remains robust.
Nevertheless, it’s evident that the sector is heading towards a definite path, and despite your feelings, it seems highly unlikely that you have much control over altering its course at the present moment.
