If you’re interested in giving your Valentine’s Day a unique twist by watching a horror romance film, consider revisiting the movie “Your Monster” starring Melissa Barrera, who was previously in “Scream“. This movie garnered positive reviews at the Sundance Film Festival and had a wider release in October. If you haven’t seen it yet, “Your Monster” has been available for streaming on Max since January 24th, and the streamer has made a point to draw attention to this addition. The hype is justified – this contemporary retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” combines a dark narrative with humor, emotion, and genuine chemistry.
The movie “Your Monster” was penned and helmed by Caroline Lindy, who also developed a short film with the same concept back in 2019. This marked the first major role for Barrera following her dismissal from “Scream 7,” demonstrating her ability to headline a production as an accomplished scream queen. In this film, Barrera portrays Laura Franco, an aspiring actress, while Edmund Donovan takes on the role of her former boyfriend, Jacob Sullivan. Lastly, Tommy Dewey embodies the monster residing in Laura’s wardrobe.
The film opens as Laura learns she has cancer and is left by her boyfriend due to his inability to support her through this difficult time. Moving back to her childhood home, she stumbles upon a creature residing in her wardrobe. An unusual bond forms between them, allowing for harmonious coexistence. The creature encourages Laura to try out for a play Jacob is producing, assuring her that his presence won’t jeopardize her opportunity for a stellar role.
This film exhibits a daring perspective on its supernatural aspects, subtly denying the presence of an actual “monster under the bed” at times and intensifying fear at others. It’s distinctively original, yet it harmoniously fits together – critics often employ words like “dreamlike” or “unorthodox” to define its mood, but it doesn’t align with movies sharing the same labels. The trailer above offers a more accurate representation of its spirit than any written review could.
Regardless, a 78% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes suggests this film could be an enjoyable choice for Valentine’s Day, given your partner’s preferences. The movie combines elements of horror, romance, and comedy, along with musical sequences, making it potentially appealing to various tastes. However, keep in mind that the film does contain a good amount of gore and violence, which might not sit well with some viewers during a romantic evening out.
Barrera the Scream Queen
Many supporters found this film to be a significant validation for Barrera, making it probable that anyone who’s a fan of hers will find something appealing in it. Barrera was gaining momentum in the horror genre as she stepped into leading roles for Scream 5 and Scream VI, and was set to star in Scream 7 as well, until November of 2023. However, she expressed her views on the conflict in Palestine via social media, criticizing Israel at that time. As a result, Barrera was dismissed from the Scream series. This decision sparked outrage among fans and colleagues, as they believed other high-profile celebrities were also condemning the conflict without facing similar repercussions.
Swiftly recovering from setbacks, Barrera had already wrapped up the vampire-themed comedy-horror film “Abigail” by then, which hit theaters in April 2024 to wide critical praise. With the upcoming release of “Your Monster” shortly afterwards, spectators were confident that Barrera could maintain a career in horror films if she so desired, proving her versatility beyond the Scream franchise.
Following Barrera’s termination, Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon both departed from the production of “Scream 7”. This led to significant changes in the movie’s plans, as original stars Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey agreed to rejoin. Currently, the film is being shot and is set for release next year. Meanwhile, Barrera has three upcoming films listed on her IMDb profile, one of which is the horror film “The One”, currently in pre-production.
Right now, ‘Your Beast’ can be found streaming on Max. It carries an R rating due to its moderate levels of violence and gore, but it could potentially add a unique twist to your Valentine’s Day celebrations this year.
