Actor Josh O’Connor, who gained widespread acclaim this year in the romantic sports drama “Challengers,” has not received any official word from Eon Productions regarding him as the potential James Bond. While there are growing whispers and speculations, ranging from fans to supposed insiders, about him being the next Agent 007, O’Connor himself stated that he hasn’t received any solid information on this matter. It’s important to mention that there are other casting rumors circulating for James Bond at present, and the role has been vacant for close to four years now.
It appears that O’Connor seemed to take responsibility for the spread of James Bond rumors, stating, “To be honest… I believe within a week, I made a humorous comment suggesting that it would be amusing if I played Bond. After this, Daniel [Craig] and I did an ‘Actors on Actors’, and then something else transpired, and all of a sudden, I was James Bond.” The actor stated he hasn’t given the viral story much thought, ending with, “If I am Bond, I have no knowledge of it.
So far, seven distinct actors have portrayed James Bond in Eon’s 25 films featuring the character. All of these actors are British, which narrows down potential A-list picks but keeps O’Connor as a possibility given his English upbringing. For many fans, it seems like finding the next Bond has been an ongoing process since Daniel Craig announced his departure from the franchise following Spectre in 2015. However, he returned one more time for No Time to Die in 2021, leaving us guessing who will step into his shoes next.
Among the more recent contenders vying for the coveted role, names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Sam Heughan, and Regé-Jean Page have been tossed around. Each one could easily slip into the tuxedo and deliver a compelling performance. However, history has shown that the notion of casting a non-white actor as Bond has sparked fierce backlash online. Idris Elba himself, in 2023, expressed his reservations about taking on the role due to the negative reaction he anticipated online.
It appears that a delay in the release of the next Bond film may not be due to casting issues, but rather disagreements between Eon (run by the Broccoli family who hold the James Bond rights) and Amazon, MGM’s new parent company. There has been no official comment from either party regarding this reported dispute and its potential impact on the production of their upcoming spy movie.
In the interim, O’Connor finds himself with a full plate as his cowboy drama Rebuilding debuts at Sundance this weekend and five more films are lined up, according to his IMDb page. For those craving a taste of his charisma, the series Challengers is currently streaming on Prime Video. Unfortunately, the James Bond movies can be found on various streaming platforms, but No Time to Die remains unavailable through subscriptions. Instead, it can be rented or bought digitally from PVOD stores such as Prime Video, Apple TV, or Fandango at Home.
