It’s common knowledge that “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” didn’t meet the high standards set by its first installment in terms of both critical acclaim and box office success. This underperformance was a significant factor in preventing a third movie from being made. The storyline of the second film unfolds after the events of the first, focusing on Peter Parker’s complex relationship with Gwen Stacy, the reappearance of his old friend Harry Osborn, insights into his parents’ past, and the introduction of a new adversary, Electro. However, despite these promising beginnings, “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” was never produced. Before the release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” Sony had boldly declared plans for a third and fourth film. So, why didn’t it happen?
Alex Kurtzman, who contributed to the second movie, was questioned about a possible third film recently. When asked by ScreenRant if there could be an Amazing Spider-Man 3, Kurtzman stated, “To be honest, we never actually wrote it. I only worked on the second one.
It’s clear that the storyline of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was overcrowded with multiple subplots and fresh characters within its 142 minutes, leading to a disorganized chaos that aimed to cover too many aspects at once. Despite earning significant box office profits, it received quite harsh reviews from critics and isn’t often fondly remembered by fans. This letdown was even more upsetting considering the warmer reception given to its precursor, with audiences and critics generally appreciating Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man and Emma Stone as his romantic interest.
As a movie enthusiast, much like Kurtzman, I’ve also shared my thoughts on the shortcomings of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Interestingly, Andrew Garfield himself has expressed his disappointment with the final outcome. He once said, “I wanted to…not that I needed to save those films, but I couldn’t infuse them with the depth, soulfulness, and vitality I had envisioned. And I’ll never be able to do that with any film. It was particularly challenging in that situation because…well, just because.”
It’s clear that Sony was following in Marvel Studios’ footsteps with their extensive interconnected film universe, as evidenced by the debut of various characters, plots, and subtle references to future projects. Alongside continuations of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, they had initial ideas for movies featuring the Sinister Six, Venom, Carnage, Spider-Man 2099, as well as reprising characters such as Gwen Stacy played by Stone and Norman Osborn portrayed by Chris Cooper.
After the sophomore attempt fell short of the studio’s desired results, they revised their plans and collaborated with Marvel Studios on the character, leading to great acclaim. On the other hand, Sony persisted with a shared cinematic universe focused on Spider-Man’s sidekicks and adversaries from the comics, but these films also failed to resonate with audiences. Consequently, Sony has once again returned to reconsider their strategies.
Fortunately for Garfield, the character of Spider-Man he once played was given a fitting conclusion when he reprised his role in 2021’s hit movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. This film brought Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man back to join forces with Tom Holland’s portrayal of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), creating a huge multiverse storyline. Although no official announcements have been made, Garfield’s appearance in the MCU has ignited fan anticipation for potential future appearances, either in another MCU movie or in his original “The Amazing Spider-Man” series. There are even whispers that he might show up in a future “Avengers” film, but these whispers should be taken with a grain of salt.
