Ronan Keating has candidly discussed his experience with Boyzone during the ’90s, revealing the emotionally challenging impact it had on his psychological well-being.
On Sunday, 2nd February, the documentary titled “Boyzone: No Matter What” is set to premiere on Sky Documentaries. It includes conversations with all four active members: Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, and Michael ‘Mikey’ Graham, as well as their former manager Louis Walsh.
Previously, other documentaries about boy bands have appeared on television screens, such as “Boybands Forever” on BBC Two and “Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam” on Netflix, both of which premiered last year. In a similar vein…
Yet, all of them share a similar thread, focusing on the insufficient mental health resources provided to musicians during their transition into stardom.
He started by saying, “I’ve seen other documentaries currently airing, and yes, many of them are competently produced. However, what sets this documentary apart is its sincerity, as it resonates with experiences that I believe we all have gone through.
In essence, we’re like marionettes, with the record company pulling the strings. They control many aspects of our lives, and unfortunately, there’s little psychological support.
Keating went on to say: “In the ’90s and noughties, there was definitely no emotional aid available. We had to figure things out on our own. And it’s a heavy burden for someone as young as 16, 17, or 18 years old.
Contemplating about the Boybands Forever show on BBC Two, Keating acknowledged that he could empathize with some of his fellow pop stars’ experiences as they spoke about their time under the limelight.
He added: “The record label, you understand, considers you as a marketable asset, often failing to recognize your humanity. They pack your schedule relentlessly without considering your human needs. It’s striking to witness the number of individuals who experienced similar challenges during that period.
This documentary served as a platform for us to discuss everything, resembling a counseling or therapy session. It proved beneficial and helpful for us.
