The DC Studios’ upcoming “Lanterns” series is gearing up for production, and actor Poorna Jagannathan, who plays character Zoe in the upcoming Max series, has given a sneak peek into the show’s grand ambitions during an interview with Collider. Intriguingly, she praised the script, hinting at significant discoveries that may shape James Gunn’s DC Universe. This comes as the talented cast for the show continues to grow, with “The Blacklist” star Ulrich Thomsen recently announced as the infamous villain Sinestro. Joining him are Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, making for a highly anticipated lineup.
Jagannathan shared her thoughts on a script she found particularly intriguing: “This is the first one where it finally makes sense why there’s an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement). The project is incredibly secretive, and I must say, it’s the best writing I’ve ever encountered.” She went on to explain why the series appealed to her, despite not being a fan of sci-fi: “It makes science fiction feel like a world I already know. It makes it easy for me to grasp. Even though I don’t understand the genre, this script makes it feel familiar to me.” Jagannathan also mentioned that filming for the series will commence shortly, marking the beginning of production.
The passion for Lanterns doesn’t stop with Jagannathan; writer Tom King has also shown comparable excitement about the main characters of the project. King notably commended the pairing of Chandler and Pierre, implying that their interaction will be crucial to the show’s success. As King put it, “Kyle exudes the essence of Hal, while Aaron embodies John Stewart with his heart, soul, and strength.
How Lanterns Will Shape DC Studios’ New Universe
In the innovative world of DC Studios under the guidance of Gunn and Safran, Lanterns serves as a cornerstone. This series merges police investigation elements with high-flying cosmic superhero action. It focuses on two Green Lanterns: Kyle Chandler’s seasoned Hal Jordan, who has been part of the Corps for decades, and Aaron Pierre’s fresh recruit, John Stewart, joining the interstellar peacekeeping force. Despite some initial worry about Chandler’s age hinting at a retirement plot, the creative team is using this dynamic strategically to foster a genuine mentor-mentee bond that can extend across various DC projects.
The main plot revolves around a deep-rooted mystery initially set in the Midwest U.S., but it eventually broadens into an intergalactic investigation. The grounded perspective resembles hit crime dramas such as “True Detective”, while the cosmic aspects delve into the intricate mythology of the Green Lantern Corps. The presence of Ulrich Thomsen, portraying Sinestro, introduces an additional layer of depth to the storyline. In DC Comics, Sinestro was once revered as the most powerful Green Lantern until his oppressive actions were revealed by Hal Jordan. This led to his exile and ultimate control over the yellow power of fear, a narrative arc that could unfold throughout the series’ duration.
The group responsible for creating “Lanterns” lends a significant level of esteem to this undertaking. Chris Mundy’s background in “True Detective: Night Country” and “Ozark” hints at an emphasis on complex storytelling and character evolution. Additionally, Damon Lindelof, known for the critically praised “Watchmen” series, and Tom King, a renowned writer for DC’s Green Lantern comics, offer both television proficiency and extensive comic book understanding to the team.
In terms of making a significant impact, it’s worth noting that Pierre has shown exceptional dedication to his role, with the actor himself referring to his preparation as “thorough” and expressing his desire to uphold John Stewart’s legacy as one of DC’s pioneering Black superheroes. Previously, he expressed, “I aim to do my utmost to serve, honor, and raise the bar in any way I can for John Stewart and the [Green Lantern] Corps.” Alongside Jagannathan’s excitement about the script and King’s compliments on the leading duo’s camaraderie, all signs point towards Lanterns potentially redefining superhero television.
