The original composer of the popular game “Banjo-Kazooie,” Grant Kirkhope, has expressed doubt that another installment in the franchise will ever be released. In a post on social media platform X, he suggested that even if a new “Banjo” game were developed, many fans of the original games might dislike it regardless.
I’ve expressed this sentiment earlier… However, I don’t have any optimism for another Banjo game, as even the most ardent fans would immediately criticize and dismiss it, regardless of its quality, a pattern that has persisted.
In relation to the Banjo series, Kirkhope has been part of the team since its inception, contributing to the music for the initial Banjo-Kazooie, the follow-up Banjo-Tooie, and the Xbox 360 release Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts. Subsequently, when a fan asked if he would be interested in composing for a new game’s soundtrack, he expressed his openness by saying “Of course.” However, recently, he hinted at a potential sequel not materializing.
On multiple occasions, Kirkhope has expressed his belief that a new Banjo-Kazooie game may not be forthcoming. In an interview from 2023, the composer indicated that the original studio could potentially take on such a project if they had the right personnel, but he voiced doubt about the existence of such a team. Furthermore, he expressed uncertainty as to whether the audience for this type of game still exists.
Though there’s been no recent news suggesting a new Banjo-Kazooie sequel, Xbox executive Aaron Greenberg previously discussed the franchise in October, expressing an awareness of its significance to fans. However, since then, Microsoft has remained silent about the game despite having owned the intellectual property for quite a while now. The only significant development regarding Banjo-Kazooie was its addition to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, enabling players to enjoy the original titles on modern platforms.
There’s talk circulating that a fresh Banjo game could potentially be under development. These whispers suggest that this new installment will serve as a reboot of the original, featuring a significant update in concept and ambition. Yet, there’s no formal confirmation regarding this matter, and even the rumors are vague about which studio might be handling the project.
2024 saw a fresh speculation that could potentially disappoint fans of Banjo. This rumor suggested that there won’t be a new Banjo-Kazooie game in development, contrary to an earlier claim that a Banjo project was approved as early as 2022. Interestingly, Xbox head Phil Spencer himself mentioned Banjo-Kazooie in 2023, expressing that the title would only come out when they find the perfect team and the right opportunity.
In the interim, die-hard Banjo fans can find games similar in style to their beloved series by exploring alternatives such as Yooka-Laylee, or delving into Nintendo’s Mario titles for a similar experience. For those who appreciate the characters, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might be worth checking out, as Banjo-Kazooie are included in its roster of platform fighters.
Of course

Previously stated… However, I harbor little optimism for another Banjo game. Regardless of its quality, die-hard fans would swiftly criticize and condemn it, making a successful launch challenging at best.
