64 years after the debut of the Fantastic Four marked the beginning of the contemporary Marvel Comics era, Marvel’s legendary family is now stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with great excitement. In anticipation of Marvel Studios’ first “Fantastic Four” film, which brings Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/the Thing to life on the big screen, Marvel is commemorating “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” by releasing a new series titled “Fantastic Four Fanfare”, showcasing enduring stories from throughout the quartet’s history.
The four-part comic book sequence presents “fresh narratives that embody the essence and warmth of the original superhero squad,” as stated by Marvel Comics. “Every installment will highlight a unique team member in captivating stories designed to delight both veteran fans and those just joining the ranks.
As a dedicated cinephile of comic books, I’m thrilled to share that an illustrious lineup of creators for the Fantastic Four has left their indelible mark on this iconic team. From Jonathan Hickman (FF), Mark Waid (who graced us with the milestone issue 500 of Fantastic Four during his run with Mike Wieringo), Dan Slott (Fantastic Four Vol. 6), Alan Davis (Fantastic Four: The End), J. Michael Straczynski (issues 527-541), Chip Zdarsky (Marvel 2-in-One), Mike Allred (FF and Silver Surfer), and artists Mark Bagley (Volumes 3 and 4 of Fantastic Four), Ramon Rosanas (Ant-Man), and Sara Pichelli (Ultimate Spider-Man) – the roster is simply awe-inspiring.
Fasten your seatbelts, fellow fans! On sale May 7, Fantastic Four Fanfare #1 comes with a captivating cover by Matteo Scalera. This issue promises a collection of stories, including:
- Mark Waid and Ramon Rosanas depict an escalating prank war between the Human Torch and the Thing!
- Alan Davis sends the team into hazards deep underground!
- Andrew Wheeler and Sara Pichelli reveal what happens when the Mole Man interrupts Johnny Storm’s star-making turn on reality television!
Apart from the current thrilling run of Ryan North on the Fantastic Four comics, the team will take center stage in Marvel’s grand event, One World Under Doom, which kicks off with the core title penned by North on February 12. Marvel Comics is also re-releasing a replica edition of the original 1961 issue #1 of The Fantastic Four and the first twelve issues of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s series, which introduced Doctor Doom, Puppet Master, the Baxter Building, the Fantasti-Car, and showcased the Four’s initial meetings with characters like the Incredible Hulk and Namor the Sub-Mariner.
In November, the fifth volume of the Fantastic Four Omnibus was published. More classic issues from Marvel’s iconic comic book will be reprinted in the sixth volume of the Fantastic Four Omnibus, scheduled for release in June. Meanwhile, the Ultimate Fantastic Four Omnibus, due out on March 18th, collects the initial 32 issues of the contemporary retelling penned by Brian Michael Bendis (known for Ultimate Spider-Man), Mark Millar (The Ultimates), Warren Ellis (Ultimate Galactus Trilogy), and artists such as Adam Kubert (Wolverine), Stuart Immonen (Ultimate Spider-Man), and Greg Land (Uncanny X-Men).
2025 brings a fresh addition to my reading list: the “Fantastic Four by Waid & Wieringo: Imaginauts” trade paperback – an exciting compilation of issues #60-66 from the 1998 Fantastic Four series, along with the “Fate of the Four” TPB (issues 1-12 of Marvel’s 2-in-One from 2017), and the captivating tales of Doctor Doom in “Doctor Doom: Books of Doom” (issues #1-6) and the “Doctor Doom” comic series by Cantwell & Larocca (issues #1-10, War of the Realms: War Scrolls #3, and King in Black: Iron Man/Doctor Doom #1). I can’t wait to dive into this thrilling journey!
The new version of Marvel’s Fantastic Four, directed by Matt Shakman (known for WandaVision), is set in a colorful, 1960s-inspired, futuristic landscape. In this reboot, Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch, and the Thing encounter their toughest challenge yet. As they juggle their heroic duties with the strong ties of family, they are tasked with protecting Earth from a voracious cosmic deity named Galactus and his mysterious Herald, Silver Surfer. The threat becomes even more personal when Galactus reveals plans to consume not only the planet but everyone on it.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is in theaters July 25.
