As the release of the Until Dawn film by PlayStation Productions approaches, it appears that the studio is already preparing for its next significant game-to-movie transformation. The Hollywood Reporter reports that PlayStation Productions will be revamping the Resident Evil movie series, with a focus on making the new films more in line with the original games.
PlayStation Productions is teaming up with screen rights-holder Constantin Film to collaborate on a fresh Resident Evil film. The script for this project will be penned by Shay Hatten, who has previously worked on John Wick: Chapter 4 and Army of the Dead. Joining Hatten will be Zach Cregger, who will contribute as both a co-writer and director for this venture. Multiple studios are vying to take charge of the film’s production, with names such as Warner Bros. and Netflix being involved in a fierce bidding war.
To date, the “Resident Evil” live-action films have maintained their own narrative thread, distinct from the video games they’re named after. These movies have starred Milla Jovovich and trace back to 2002 as their initial release. While not closely tied to the games beyond incorporating zombies and the Umbrella Corporation, the “Resident Evil” films featuring Jovovich have proven to be financially successful, earning a total of $1.2 billion globally.
In the interim, PlayStation Productions’ upcoming movie “Until Dawn” has just released a trailer, providing us with an overview of what we can anticipate from this horror film. The movie will incorporate familiar horror elements such as teenagers socializing at a spooky cabin in the forest, but things take a strange turn when all the teenagers are killed, followed by a twist where time rewinds and the main characters miraculously awaken, still carrying the recollections of their gruesome deaths.
It’s worth noting that the movie based on Until Dawn won’t be a direct adaptation of the game. Instead, the game itself aims to narrate its unique tale about a group of teenagers as the main characters. However, there appears to be a deeper narrative at work, given the time-reversing mechanic in the game, which seems reminiscent of save files in video games, where characters remember past events.
Until Dawn is helmed by David F. Sandberg in both directing and writing capacities, with Blaur Butler and Gary Dauberman contributing to the script. The film boasts an impressive cast including Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maima Mitchell, and Peter Stormare. Mark your calendars as it is set to premiere in cinemas on April 25.
There’s chatter circulating as well, suggesting that a follow-up to the movie might be under development by Firesprite, the team behind “Horizon Call of the Mountain.
