Mini Review: Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter (PS5) – A Simple Tail of Bigger and Better

Tails of Iron 2: Frosttails’ Fury

The sequel to Tails of Iron, Whiskers of Winter, is a traditional follow-up – it’s a grander, more polished game compared to its predecessor in the animal action RPG genre. You’ll step into the paws of a fresh character in an entirely new setting. This new installment expands upon the foundation set by the first game, offering a broader playfield and more intricate game mechanics as you embark on a quest to track down the bats who ravaged your homeland.

Once again, enchanting graphics adorn the screen, accompanied by the familiar animation style and combat that offers an unexpected level of difficulty. In this iteration, the combat has been refined; it moves at a quicker pace, and as you progress, you’ll gain access to elemental attacks, traps, and tools such as a whetstone to temporarily enhance your weapon. The transition between fights remains somewhat rigid, but as you become accustomed to the game’s rhythm, you’ll find yourself more engrossed in its improved battles.

The changing day and night in the game significantly alters the types of enemies you’ll come across while exploring different environments. Keeping track of which foes appear where and when will be crucial if you want to gather specific components for the armor you plan to craft. This feature adds a sense of dynamism to the world, keeping players alert and adaptable as they strategize their loadout to tackle each enemy’s unique elemental traits. However, having to frequently switch weapons and armor to combat various enemies can feel tedious at times, but this burden lessens as you advance and collect better gear.

The story shares a similar somber atmosphere as the initial game, featuring a harsh saga of revenge that stands in stark contrast to the charming creatures. Once again, Doug Cockle, renowned for voicing The Witcher’s Geralt, assumes the role of narrator. His ominous narration further emphasizes the grim and serious tone present in Tails of Iron 2.

The traversal has been enhanced, featuring an increased number of fast travel locations throughout each terrain and new hookshot points for quick movement to specific areas. However, despite these improvements, there may still be some slow periods during backtracking, especially since you’ll often find yourself going back and forth due to the numerous side quests available.

In essence, the game presents an enhanced version of what made Tails of Iron popular, with clever expansions to boot. Although there are certain areas needing polish, it stands as a superior sequel, offering an entertaining and tough journey.
