Seinfeld, initially aired in 1989, is widely recognized not just as one of the iconic TV shows of the ’90s but also as one of the all-time great TV series. Its humor, revolving around trivial, everyday occurrences that the characters would exaggerate to absurd levels, earned it the nickname “a show about nothing.” The laugh-out-loud storylines, memorable dialogue, and eccentric supporting characters kept viewers engaged long after the final season. Interestingly, a well-known Marvel Cinematic Universe actor made their first television appearance on Seinfeld.
It might surprise you to know that Jon Favreau, the actor who portrayed Tony Stark’s loyal friend and bodyguard Happy Hogan in the Iron Man films, was actually the same person who directed the first two Iron Man movies! Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts on Reddit are quite excited about this interesting tidbit, chuckling at the thought that the man responsible for launching this incredibly successful franchise initially made his mark as a minor character on a popular ’90s sitcom.
In Season 5’s episode titled “The Fire,” he appeared as Eric the Clown at a child’s birthday party. George Costanza (played by Jason Alexander) was present and initiated a chat with Eric. However, their conversation took an awkward turn when George seemed puzzled that Eric hadn’t heard of Bozo the Clown, a clown famous in previous decades. Eric appeared bewildered as to why George would care so much about a clown from the past. But it was George who ended up looking foolish when a fire started and he pushed women, children, and Eric aside to be the first one to escape the apartment, creating more chaos instead.
Unlike many celebrities who might prefer to distance themselves from their early, less prominent roles, Favreau appears unfazed by them. In fact, when Frank Avruch, one of the numerous Bozo the Clown actors, passed away in 2018, Favreau paid tribute to him by tweeting a clip from Seinfeld featuring his character Eric.
Given that numerous actors have been part of “Seinfeld” and are now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s likely we’ll find some common ground between these two popular series. Unsurprisingly, Favreau isn’t the only actor from “Seinfeld” who later became a part of this cinematic behemoth.
One noteworthy instance of an actor transitioning roles is Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who was previously known as Elaine Benes, and has recently taken on the character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. She’s been seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and is set to reprise this role in Thunderbolts*. Additionally, James Spader, who played the Ultron character, took on the role of George’s old friend Jason Hanky, a character struggling with anger issues. Lastly, Patton Oswalt, who voiced Pip the Troll towards the end of Eternals, and like Favreau, started his television career on Seinfeld, where he played a video rental clerk.
If the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues expanding at its current pace, it won’t be long before we see the entire Seinfeld crew making an appearance.
Seinfeld is available to watch on Netflix.
