In a unique twist, the Marvel story titled “What If…? Mickey and Friends Became the Fantastic Four” takes Disney’s classic quartet — Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, and Donald Duck — and transforms them into Marvel’s original superhero team. This one-off adventure, conceptualized by Steve Behling, written by Riccardo Secchi, and illustrated by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio, grants Mickey the elastic abilities of Mr. Fantastic, Minnie the power to become invisible like the Invisible Woman, Goofy the capacity to ignite as the Human Torch, and Donald Duck the rock-hard strength of the Thing.
Following their victorious battle against Mole Pete’s underground army of creatures in a Disney-inspired reimagining of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s initial issue of Fantastic Four, Mickey Mouse’s team will make their way back to the surface. Over the next dozen issues, they will be featured on Disney What If? variant covers that pay tribute to iconic covers from the original Fantastic Four. This series kicks off with this week’s issue #28 by Ryan North and Steven Cummings. In honor of the upcoming Marvel Studios film The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a new cover will be released each month beginning with this one.
Initially, six of the covers (as displayed) are reminiscent of the original #3 issue of Fantastic Four from 1961. This particular cover marked the introduction of the team’s uniforms, their base, the Flying Fantasti-Car, and the first appearance of the green-skinned Poppupian, known as the Impossible Man, in issue #11 of Fantastic Four (FF). Furthermore, there’s a nod to “This Man… This Monster!”, a memorable storyline from Lee and Kirby’s iconic FF #51.
Among the extra features are:
1. The Fantastic Four’s fight against Galactus in issue #173 of FF in 1976, drawn by Roy Thomas and John Buscema and featuring a cover by Kirby and Joe Sinnott.
2. Issue #282 of FF from 1985, which showcases Daisy Duck as She-Hulk, who joined the team during John Byrne’s tenure.
3. A tribute to issue #60 of Fantastic Four (Vol. 3) from 2002, marking the beginning of the significant Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo run on the series.
