For eight years now, “The Vampire Diaries” has come to an end, yet fans have had other shows like “The Originals” and “Legacies” to explore. However, much like with prolonged series, the enthusiasts of this CW supernatural drama are still left pondering unanswered questions. The narrative follows Elena Gilbert, a high school student living in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, who unknowingly steps into the intricate and perilous realm of the supernatural upon encountering a new student at her school who is actually a vampire.
Over eight seasons, “The Vampire Diaries” witnessed Elena transform into a vampire herself, alongside her friend Caroline, navigate a complex love triangle, and face numerous perils that extended beyond just vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural entities. The series finale in 2017 provided closure to the primary storylines and offered a fulfilling conclusion for not only Elena’s journey but also those of most major characters. However, there are lingering questions from the show’s entire run that fans continue to ponder. Ranging from queries about vampire biology, cryptic messages from deceased family members, magic usage, and more, here are seven unanswered questions that “The Vampire Diaries” enthusiasts are still eager to know, even years later.
7. Who Really Were the First Vampires?
In Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries, it was revealed that all vampires originate from a single family known as the Mikaelsons, who were also referred to as the Original Vampires in the series. These vampires were said to be the first humans transformed into immortals, implying that every other vampire is connected to them through their lineage, a concept known as Sire Lines in The Vampire Diaries. However, subsequent seasons introduced characters such as Amara, Silas, and Qetsiyah, who were depicted as the first immortals. Amara served as Qetsiyah’s handmaiden, while Silas was in love with her. During their time together, Silas and Qetsiyah created an elixir of immortality intended for their wedding, but Silas ultimately betrayed Qetsiyah by taking the elixir with Amara, leading to a great deal of drama and conflict.
The series introduces Silas as a creature resembling a vampire, which leads to wondering: Who was the original vampire? Also, it’s intriguing to consider if the way Silas and Amara became immortal differs significantly from how the Mikaelsons were created. A careful viewing of The Vampire Diaries seems to provide an answer to this question, implying that Silas and Amara are the first immortals, while the Mikaelsons are considered the first true vampires. However, despite this clarification, the whole concept remains rather puzzling.
6. What Did Sheriff Forbes Write in Her Letter to Caroline?
In Season 6, Sheriff Forbes, played by Margaret Lewis, is diagnosed with cancer and eventually passes away. This tragic event leaves a deep impact on Caroline, portrayed by Candice Accola. Before her demise, Forbes writes a letter to her daughter, but the content of this letter remains unknown to both Caroline and the audience. Overwhelmed by grief, Caroline decides to suppress her human emotions and later refuses to reactivate them when prompted. During an attempt to help Caroline reconnect with her humanity, Elena encourages her to read the letter from her mother. Instead, a heartbroken Caroline destroys the letter. Later, when she regains consciousness, Caroline realizes the gravity of her actions and is left wondering what her mother’s final message might have been. Unfortunately, neither Caroline nor viewers are ever privy to its contents.
It’s interesting to note that this question lacks a definitive response, not even the writers and show creator have found an answer for it. Back in 2017, showrunner Julie Plec admitted that they never discovered what Sheriff Forbes wrote in her letter, despite their attempts to do so.
In my critique, one loose end persisted throughout the storyline – a mystery that remained unresolved even after a full year of viewing: the content of the letter Sheriff Forbes penned, which Caroline ultimately decided to destroy. I was left wondering what secrets it held.
As a passionate film connoisseur, I’ll admit that we stumbled upon some truly disappointing ideas during our brainstorming sessions, but for the life of us, we couldn’t crack the code. If only the climactic finale had taken place in a tranquil setting, allowing all these captivating characters to reconnect and communicate, perhaps it would have unfolded differently.
5. Why Didn’t Bonnie Just Use Magic to Find Her Mom?
Instead of using magic to find her long-lost mother Abby, who is part of a lineage of powerful witches, Bonnie Bennett decided to employ a more conventional search method: she looked up every woman named ‘Abby Bennett’ in the vicinity of Mystic Falls. While it may seem reasonable for an ordinary person, Bonnie being a witch could easily have used locator spells. However, Bonnie chose this mundane approach, perhaps as a test or due to personal reasons, not relying on her magical abilities to locate her mother.
For years, fans have debated about this, but the show never explicitly explains why Bonnie resorted to conventional methods instead of magic to find her mom. However, considering the series’ rules, there seems to be a plausible explanation. Since Abby was a witch, we eventually learn that she lost her magical abilities after imprisoning Mikael. But here’s the twist: when Bonnie was searching for her mother, she wasn’t aware of this fact. It’s possible that Bonnie assumed her mom wouldn’t be found using magic due to her presumed inability to use it.
4. What Happened to Damon’s Powers?
In the initial season of “The Vampire Diaries”, Damon displayed some unique abilities. Specifically, he possessed the capability to transform into a raven (specifically a crow) and manipulate fog. However, these talents weren’t permanent and have left fans curious about their disappearance, particularly because the crow transformation was part of Damon’s character in L.J. Smith’s novels. But where did those powers vanish? As it turns out, he never truly possessed them. The series essentially wrote off the crow as something Damon was merely controlling, and later, series co-creator Kevin Williamson clarified that this was an ability they chose to abandon early on.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2019, Williamson explained that in the pilot, Damon played a character who transformed into a bird. However, this was not literally him turning into a crow as depicted in the book. The creative team decided against having characters turn into animals and instead chose to omit that aspect of the story from the series by the third episode. In simpler terms, they “killed off” the bird-related plot point early on in the show’s development.
3. What Exactly is the Supply Chain Situation For Vervain?
In every vampire tale, immortal undead beings are often given a specific weakness. In the world of The Vampire Diaries, one significant vulnerability is vervain. However, the show sometimes struggled with consistency regarding how easily accessible this herb actually was. Sometimes it was abundant, while other instances depicted it as scarce. At one point, it’s hinted that the cultivation, application, and trade of vervain are strictly regulated in Mystic Falls, but this doesn’t seem to be consistently enforced, leaving viewers puzzled about the real status of the herb.
2. Who is Nadia’s Father?
In Season 5 of “The Vampire Diaries,” Katherine’s past was given a significant twist with the appearance of her daughter, Nadia Petrova. This character showed up in Mystic Falls as an adult vampire, and there are many unanswered questions about Nadia. It turns out that she was born to Katherine in Bulgaria in 1490 but was taken away from her mother at birth and given to someone else. Years later, after Katherine managed to escape Klaus, she spent much time searching for her daughter without success. The show provides only brief glimpses into Nadia’s life — we learn that she sought her mother in Northern Europe around 1520 and again in France during the year 1720. However, we are never told who turned Nadia into a vampire or who her biological father was, or if this information holds any importance to the storyline.
Contrary to the impression given by this being an “unanswered question,” there is indeed an answer. It turns out that a missing scene from Season 5 sheds light on Nadia’s father’s background, revealing him as a Traveler – a member of a secret society of witches with a history spanning thousands of years.
1. What Ultimately Happened to Katherine?
In summary, the final episode of “The Vampire Diaries” wrapped up the stories for its major characters, revealing their endings and hinting at what happened to them in the afterlife. Fans were content that Damon, Elena, Jenna, Stefan, Lexi, and the Gilbert family found rest, Enzo received his own universe, and Caroline established the Salvatore School. However, Katherine’s ultimate fate remains unclear as she was destroyed by Hellfire along with Stefan, but considering her villainous nature, it seems improbable that she would find peace. It leaves fans speculating if she resides in a pocket universe or if she was simply eliminated from all realms of existence. The series’ cryptic destruction and antagonist resolution left some fans questioning the finer details, sparking curiosity about Katherine’s ultimate fate.
