Upon disembarking from a helicopter in the Costa Rican rainforest to join her fellow contestants for Netflix’s latest reality series, Celebrity Bear Hunt, Shirley Ballas, an experienced Strictly Come Dancing judge, felt apprehensive.
In my experience, participating in the Celebrity Bear Hunt isn’t just about facing off against Bear Grylls; it’s a test of survival skills like building shelters, learning knot-tying, staying hydrated (including consuming water from unusual sources), and outsmarting the wilderness. However, as Ballas notes, “Bear sees action heroes in all of us.” Consequently, this Bear Hunt isn’t just about competition; it also offers opportunities for personal growth and self-improvement.
As a film enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree with Bear. She believes that when faced with survival, we can uncover hidden strengths within ourselves. It’s about stepping into the unknown and working together as a team – a skill that’s crucial if you don’t fancy yourself as a solo player in challenging situations.
Ballas sees herself as someone who works well with others. She explains, “I’m just like any other kid from the neighborhood. I can blend in easily. I don’t require special treatment – I’m not an elderly woman just yet. And when I entered, I didn’t come off as snobby or high-class. In fact, that’s not the kind of person I am.” Referring to diva-like behavior, she adds, “There were a few individuals like that, but I wasn’t one of them.
Speaking about her fellow competitor on Bear Hunt, Boris Becker, who had previously served time for bankruptcy fraud, she expressed warm feelings towards him. “He was more like a parent figure to our group,” she said. “I grew fond of that man. Truly an exceptional individual, he was.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In the heart of the jungle, maturity often proved the key to success. Pausing to strategize, thinking things through, and sometimes taking a moment to ponder were essential. Keeping my eyes on the prize, avoiding impulsive decisions, and resisting distractions or idle chatter were crucial for staying on track.
Despite her successful career as a choreographer, directing others, Ballas admits that in her personal life she prefers to follow rather than lead like a bossy commanding officer. She enjoys having instructions given to her, is punctual, organized, and tidy, and never missed a deadline. In this instance, Big Zuu was the chef, and she was the one who kept the kitchen clean.
Ballas emphasizes that Bear Hunt wasn’t a stroll in the park. He highlights some obstacles like the animals, particularly spiders and red ants. In fact, he mentions trees where if you accidentally touch them, ants will swarm onto you and cause an itchy, potentially fatal reaction – something that actually happened to a few people.
Additionally, it wasn’t just the ant attacks that tested their limits; at the conclusion of each team challenge, individuals who weren’t meeting Bear Grylls’ expectations were confined to a hazardous area. This 50-acre territory, a mix of scrub and savannah, was brimming with tripwires, snares, and cages. The contestants had to navigate through this treacherous zone before Bear could catch them.
Ballas recalls, “I found it utterly terrifying. It was a precarious situation. These small arrows were our guide to escape, yet at every step, we knew he was hidden nearby, biding his time to catch us.
Her method involved converting every obstacle into a dance routine. In other words, she treated every task as if it were a work of art or choreography. If there was a gap in a bridge, would she leap over it? What was the optimal approach angle? How could she do so with elegance? Regardless of the situation, she maintained her focus.
Although she’s reluctant to disclose her final results, she does confess that merely participating on the show was a personal victory for her.
