Regarding Ubisoft’s future, it appears substantial transformations are taking place. Approximately 185 positions have been eliminated, and the UK studio in Leamington Spa is set to permanently close. Ubisoft has also announced plans to reduce staff at its European branches located in Düsseldorf, Stockholm, and Newcastle. A handful of employees from the Leamington studio will continue working remotely under contract.
According to a statement given to Eurogamer, Ubisoft is making changes aimed at focusing on projects and cutting expenses for long-term company stability. These changes include restructuring at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm, and Ubisoft Reflections, as well as the permanent closure of the Ubisoft Leamington site.
Despite having over 18,000 employees on its payroll by 2024, it seems that Ubisoft is preparing for more layoffs in 2025. Even if the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows game performs well, Ubisoft appears to be working towards becoming a more attractive option for investors.
To give you an idea of Ubisoft’s scale (and using a familiar analogy), Sony’s PlayStation Studios – which create gaming experiences that spawn long-lasting fan communities such as Push Square – has approximately 4,000 employees distributed among its first-party developer family. This number might still be considered excessive.
1) Is there a possibility that Ubisoft may have to let go of more employees this year?
2) What number of copies sold for Assassin’s Creed Shadows would be enough to help Ubisoft recover financially?
