We’ve been keeping tabs on Games Workshop‘s quest for the next blockbuster Warhammer game after the anticipated release of Space Marine 2 in 2024, and so far, it’s shaping up to be quite an exciting journey. If you have opinions about Games Workshop’s contentious decision to rewrite the original Warhammer fantasy tabletop universe, adjust your reactions accordingly: the cancelled RPG, which was supposed to be published by Nexon, was instead set in the comparatively less gritty Age of Sigmar world.
A representative from Thought Pennies, whose staff departures were mentioned by MP1st and subsequently reported on by various media outlets, shared more information with Eurogamer: “Although our collaboration was productive and we benefited greatly from Nexon’s insights, Nexon decided to make a strategic shift. We mutually agreed to conclude the project towards the end of last year, and Nexon is now assisting as a board member.
In contrast to the initial reception of Age of Sigmar in 2015, which some critics felt abandoned classic, epic elements reminiscent of Tolkien’s works by replacing familiar terms like elves and orcs with new, trademark-friendly names such as Aelves and Orruks, its reputation has since improved. However, given the smaller fanbase compared to Warhammer 40,000, a sci-fi setting that served as a cornerstone for Space Marine 2’s original appeal, introducing Age of Sigmar might have detracted from some of the unique qualities that initially set it apart.
