It appears that one of the most cherished games from the Sega Dreamcast era might be making a comeback, hinted by recent moves from Sega. Despite the Dreamcast’s relatively short lifespan, it boasted an enduring collection of Sega games that remain popular to this day. Throughout its existence, the Dreamcast produced numerous top-tier titles such as Sonic Adventure 2, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Phantasy Star Online 2, Samba de Amigo, Power Stone 2, Crazy Taxi, Seaman, SoulCalibur, and many more. Now, following a new update this month, it seems that Sega may be working on something fresh related to what is arguably the finest game from the Dreamcast library.
This month, it’s been discovered that Sega submitted a new trademark for the game “Skies of Arcadia“. Originally launched on the Dreamcast in 2000 (known as “Eternal Arcadia” in Japan), this game is widely regarded as one of the best ever released on the Sega console. Developed by Overworks, “Skies of Arcadia” features a sky pirate protagonist named Vyse and shares gameplay characteristics with other Japanese-style turn-based RPGs. It was later ported to Nintendo GameCube as “Skies of Arcadia: Legends”, but has yet to appear on any other platforms, even though fans have consistently asked for it.
Approximately a week and a half ago, on January 16th, Sega submitted applications for both “Skies of Arcadia” and “Eternal Arcadia” trademarks in Japan. It’s unclear what led to this action, but the fact that they are re-registering these trademarks hints at some new development related to these properties.
Regarding the potential plans for Sega’s game “Skies of Arcadia,” it’s a real mystery now. A plausible option is that they might launch a revamped version or fresh adaptation of the game, making it more convenient than ever to play. On the other hand, they could opt for a complete overhaul or continuation of “Skies of Arcadia,” aligning with their recent resurgence of franchises such as “Crazy Taxi,” “Jet Set Radio,” and “Virtua Fighter.
Currently, we’re unaware about the future plans for the Skies of Arcadia, but it appears Sega is secretly working on something related to this intellectual property. Here’s hoping that more details about their project will be revealed sometime in 2025.
