Fans of Quentin Tarantino will have to be patient, as the acclaimed director is taking his time before starting production on his last film. During a conversation at the Sundance Film Festival (as reported by Variety), Tarantino shared his future plans and emphasized that he wants to spend more time being a father to his two young children. “I’m not in a rush to start filming,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for 30 years now. My son is turning 5 next month, and I have a 2.5-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I write. When I’m in Israel, I’m a ‘Abba,’ which means father.”
Tarantino shared that he plans to postpone starting his next project until his children are old enough to grasp its content fully. He finds the idea of embarking on a new journey while they’re still too young to comprehend it unappealing. Instead, he wants to wait until his son is at least six years old so he can understand what’s happening, be part of the experience, and create a lasting memory from it throughout his life.
For quite some time, Tarantino has been firm in his statement that his next movie, marking his tenth feature film, would be his last. Initially, it seemed like this project was going to be “The Movie Critic”, a film set in the 1970s revolving around a disillusioned film critic. However, despite high-profile actors such as Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise being linked with the project, Tarantino eventually scrapped “The Movie Critic” and opted to begin anew.
Before “The Movie Critic”, it was known that Tarantino had been working on a new Star Trek film, penned by Mark L. Smith. In 2023, Smith shared insights into the script’s development, describing it as an “extreme” project. However, Tarantino expressed reservations about his Star Trek movie serving as his final work. Recently, Tarantino confirmed that the Star Trek film will not materialize, leaving us curious about what will be his last production instead.
Previously, Quentin Tarantino expressed that his decision to stop after ten films comes from his aspiration to exit on an impressive note. He posits that directors generally don’t improve as they age, so he intends to retire when he still has creative energy left in him. This explains his deliberate approach, for it’s not just about a touching reason (making memories on set with his children), but also ensuring that his tenth film is his best work yet, given his successful track record of two Oscars and numerous Best Picture nominations throughout his career. It would be disappointing if his farewell project fell short of the high standards he’s established throughout the past few decades.
Tarantino is delaying the production of his next film until after his son turns six, suggesting a wait of several years for fans to witness the final chapter of the director’s career. The path he chooses for this project remains to be seen, but it’s unlikely to be another installment in an existing franchise. Given his hesitation over taking on Star Trek, it’s doubtful Tarantino would opt for a superhero or Star Wars movie as his swan song. Instead, we can expect one of his signature original stories, filled with sharp dialogue, distinctive characters, and intense violence.
