‘Rings of Power’ Season Two Plummets with 60% Audience Loss: Amazon’s Costly Flop?

It’s unfortunate, but the second season of Amazon Prime Studio’s “The Rings of Power” has been labeled a major flop based on external reviews.

2024’s Luminate TV and Film Report portrays a dismal outlook for Amazon’s “The Rings of Power,” showing that season two underperformed by a shocking 60% compared to its first season. Despite Amazon’s attempts to reframe the story, it seems that a large chunk of its viewership has moved on, making “The Rings of Power” one of the priciest entertainment flops in recent history.

The statistics clearly demonstrate the plotline. The first season attracted close to 8 billion minutes in viewership, a figure that Amazon proudly presented as proof of achievement. Yet, the second season plummeted to around 3 billion minutes – a staggering decrease that suggests most viewers who tried the initial season didn’t come back for more.

According to earlier reports from The Hollywood Reporter, similar to what Kim Masters disclosed, approximately 63% of viewers didn’t finish the first season of the show. This suggests they stopped watching it halfway through and never returned – a concerning figure given that the series was reportedly made with an estimated $1 billion budget.

And somehow the second season performed worse.

Following a disappointing debut for season one, Amazon Prime Video swiftly enacted a large-scale workforce reduction, eliminating numerous positions throughout both Amazon Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. Despite this, Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, stood firm in her support for the series.

Salke attempted to portray season two as a triumph while it was airing, despite the fact that Nielsen ratings showed a significant decrease in viewership, suggesting a large number of viewers were leaving.

During an interview, Salke stated that approximately 55 million individuals have interacted with the show ever since its second season premiered. Moreover, she proudly mentioned that a total of around 150 million viewers have watched and participated in the series overall.

She stated, “This is a long-term investment in that franchise,” as she stood firm on the studio’s five-season strategy for the series. Yet, Salke hesitated to provide a clear yes about the widely anticipated 50-episode promise, which could suggest some reservations within Amazon’s executive team.

Regardless of harsh criticism and a drop in viewership, the production of The Rings of Power‘s third season has still been given the go-ahead.

J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay, the duo who took on the challenging role despite having little experience prior, affirmed their ongoing commitment to the production of what is now known as the costliest show ever made.

Addressing Ebaster in the context of an article that deemed their struggling series a success, they provided general reassurances, saying, “We are currently working on it with great intensity,” and hinted that the forthcoming season would be impressive, using the word “awesome.

Although Payne and McKay may express enthusiasm, viewers tend to maintain a degree of doubt. The series has been subjected to persistent critique due to its emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) aspects rather than adhering strictly to storytelling authenticity. Many devoted Tolkien fans have voiced their disapproval towards the show for its deviations from traditional lore, the prominence of strong female characters, and a lackluster writing style that seemingly missed the mark in capturing Middle-earth’s essence.

These options proved unpopular among fans who appreciate the intricate depth, enduring motifs, and painstaking attention to detail in Tolkien’s universe.

Amazon’s billion-dollar investment aimed to solidify The Rings of Power as a cultural powerhouse, however, the project has turned into a cautionary story. The substantial decline in viewership along with underwhelming audience feedback demonstrates the consequences when corporate ambitions collide with the anticipations of dedicated fans. It remains uncertain if Season 3 will revive the show’s success, but the prospects are far from optimistic.

It’s clear now that, regardless of the budget, subpar creative choices will always be noticeable in “The Rings of Power.
