I’ve been witnessing a remarkable journey with the Mobile Suit franchise lately. One of its latest cinematic forays takes us back into the captivating world of Gundam SEED. The box office success of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is undeniable, but it may soon face competition.
The complexity of its name aside, Gundam GQuuuuuux is another story under the Mobile Suit banner, masterfully crafted by Hideaki Anno, the genius behind Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Shin Universe. Now in its second weekend in theaters, this compilation film continues to reign high amidst stiff competition.
Similar to the narrative of NERV, Anno returns to the theme of teenage mecha operators who find themselves in challenging circumstances. Unlike the Gundam pilots who battled Angels in his previous work, these new characters have their unique difficulties. Drawing inspiration from earlier series such as “The Witch From Mercury” and “G Gundam“, the upcoming story follows protagonist Amate Yuzuriha joining an underground fighting league called “Clan Battles.” Without revealing too much, the atmosphere of this new series could surprise longtime mecha enthusiasts.
Gundam Stays Number One
For the second consecutive weekend, “Gundam GQuuuuuux -Beginning-” has claimed the top spot at Japan’s box office. This mech movie managed to surpass the recent live-action adaptation of “Under Ninja”, as well as “Cells At Work”. The anime sector was also represented in the top ten by the latest Hatsune Miku anime film, titled “Project Seikai The Movie: The Broken World and The Miku Who Can’t Sing“.
The Gundam movie has earned more than $9 million USD at the box office, but it still needs to increase its earnings if it wants to match the success of its previous run, Gundam SEED Freedom. Don’t worry, fans in the West; the compilation film will be shown in North American cinemas on February 28th next month. As for the television series, a specific release date for its premiere episode hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it is expected to air later in 2025.
Gundam’s Bright Future
Hideaki Anno’s latest series isn’t the only mech-themed production being planned; in fact, the iconic Gundam franchise has several anime projects lined up to celebrate its 45th and upcoming 50th anniversary. Notably, it was announced that the continuation of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash is still being developed, with a potential release this year as suggested by Bandai Namco. Additionally, Netflix is actively developing a live-action movie for the franchise, following the successes of “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. Although details about other projects remain under wraps, one thing that’s clear is the enduring popularity of Gundam.
