The first installment follows the Severed Mark (played by Adam Scott) as he awakens on the detached floor and discovers that five months have elapsed since the Macrodata Refinement uprising in his normal life. In contrast, the second episode indicates that only a few days have transpired in the external world, with Lumon continuing to manipulate its employees as they carry on working. By juxtaposing these episodes, we can construct the sequence of events in “Severance” and uncover when (and why) Outie-Mark opted to rejoin Lumon. However, there’s a minor problem: Outie-Mark disappears for 24 hours without any explanation.

In the opening episode of Season 2, we find Innie-Mark grappling with his predicament: being relegated from his old team and compelled to resume duties at Macrodata Management. On the third workday, he defies orders, storming into Mr. Milchick’s office (played by Tramell Tillman) and dialing the board. Innie-Mark insists on rejoining his team, a request that ultimately gets approved due to his crucial role at Lumon and the “Cold Harbor” case. However, after his solitary uprising on that third day, Mr. Milchick escorts him into an elevator, confiscating his badge and warning him of imminent termination.

In Episode 2, we get a glimpse of the same scenario as seen through Outie-Mark’s eyes. At precisely 9:03 in the morning, he arrives at work and nods to the friendly guard stationed by the elevator, Judd (Mark Kenneth Smaltz). By 9:15, Outie-Mark exits the elevator, confusing Judd with a puzzled good evening greeting. It appears that Outie-Mark believes he has completed an entire day’s work, and Judd was not informed about Mark returning so early from the elevator. However, the show Severance doesn’t explain the time difference. Immediately afterward, we see Mark back at work the following day, around 9 a.m. So, what transpired during those missing hours?

What Happened to Outie-Mark for the Missing 24 Hours?

In “Severance,” the series is known for its manipulation of viewer perspective and narrative sequence. It’s possible that the story might delve back into Outie-Mark’s unclear past to provide insights into his motivations. The subplot involving Mark’s reintegration has been mostly untouched since the initial season, leaving viewers wondering if or when Dr. Reghabi (Karen Aldridge) contacted him after their significant university encounter. There’s a speculation that Outie-Mark might be secretly working against Lumon, aiming to uncover what transpires on the severed floor.

A simpler interpretation could be: It appears that Mark discovered a note saying his colleague Innie was forced out due to an accident at work, as Lumon is known for concealing the truth about the upper floors to maintain the facade of a functioning company, and they might easily mislead Mark again.

Despite its advantages, this choice presents certain challenges. Initially, Outie-Mark lost his badge, forcing him to contact someone from Administration prior to resuming work the next day. Moreover, Mr. Milchick intended to dismiss Innie-Mark, which explains why he took his badge. This suggests a lack of protective measures to clarify the situation for Outie-Mark. As a result, an uncomfortable conversation would have occurred before Mark’s return to work, and this happening off-screen may be crucial to the storyline’s development.
