A key component of the ‘Big Three’ shonen genre, Naruto is frequently recognized for its grand and impactful battles. However, it’s not just the action that makes these skirmishes so iconic; Masashi Kishimoto demonstrates exceptional storytelling abilities as well. As he skillfully escalates the narrative towards intense physical conflicts, he immerses viewers in the characters’ emotions, revealing their motivations for fighting. This, along with the potential repercussions of defeat, infuses the fights with significance and resonance that has endured for over two decades.
Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead for Naruto and Naruto Shippuden!
Even though some battles might seem common, others remain etched in our memory for various reasons – be it the personalities of the combatants, the intricate dance of movements, or what the fight symbolizes. In fact, several brawls from the anime Naruto were eagerly awaited by fans long before they actually took place. A prime example is the heart-stopping clash between the Uchiha brothers, Itachi and Sasuke, their final encounter being a standout memory for many viewers. Unlike some other anime where the fight sequences may now appear less impressive, the battles in Naruto continue to impress with their well-crafted execution and engaging viewing experience. In fact, certain fights have stood the test of time due to their unique choreography, memorable characters, and innovative techniques.
10. Hiruzen vs. Orochimaru
In the initial “Naruto” battle, the confrontation between the Third Hokage Hiruzen and his former disciple Orochimaru was captivating right from the beginning. This fight was unique as it showcased what high-level Kage combat truly entailed. The emotional impact of the conflict, pitting teacher against student, was immense. Moreover, the destiny of the entire Hidden Leaf Village was at stake, keeping fans on edge.
In this battle, fans got their initial glimpse of the prohibited techniques, particularly when Orochimaru employed the Impure World Reincarnation to resurrect Hiruzen’s mentor, the Second Hokage, and his elder brother, the First Hokage. Having command over these two Hokages left Hiruzen at a significant disadvantage. However, conceding defeat was not an option for him. Instead, driven by determination, Hiruzen decided to use the Death Reaper Seal Jutsu, a forbidden technique, to imprison Orochimaru and the past Hokages at the expense of his own life.
9. Itachi vs. Sasuke
For the initial encounter with Sasuke, it’s clear that one fact stands out: he harbors deep animosity towards his brother due to the slaughter of their clan and seeks vengeance. And when this pivotal confrontation takes place, Naruto delivers an unforgettable battle scene. The conflict ignites as Sasuke challenges Itachi within the Uchiha Sanctum, where Itachi is seated regally on a chair resembling a throne.
As an anime aficionado, I charge forward with brute force, employing taijutsu, seemingly securing victory. Yet, it was merely a trick, and my brother Itachi unveiled the deception. The chasm between our skills remains vast, with Itachi holding the undeniable edge. Wielding Amaterasu, he scorches my Cursed Seal form. However, the tide shifts when rain starts falling, offering me an opportunity to strike Itachi powerfully with a Kirin!
Despite being injured, Itachi employs his Susanoo to confine Orochimaru, who had been concealed within Sasuke all along. Subsequently, he advances towards a fatigued and frightened Sasuke, sparking speculation among fans about whether the younger Uchiha will truly forfeit his eyes to his elder brother. However, in an unexpected turn of events that would later become clear, Itachi gently touches Sasuke’s forehead and offers an apology before succumbing to exhaustion.
8. Madara vs. the Five Kage
In the Naruto series, the battle between Madara and the Five Kages was less of a fair fight and more of a one-sided massacre. Yet, it’s significant because it showcases Madara’s immense power. At first, it appears that the Five Kages might stand a chance. However, it becomes clear later that Madara had been concealing his strength all along. He then generates 25 Wood Clones to reverse their five-to-one advantage against him.
The situation becomes more challenging as Madara orders all 25 of his clones to engage Susanoo in battle. Despite the tough odds, the Kage maintain their resolve and counterattack. This defiance triggers Madara to unleash his Ultimate Susanoo, a formidable power capable of reducing mountains to rubble with a single blow.
7. Kakashi vs. Obito
During the Third Great Ninja War, when Obito selflessly gives up his life to shield Kakashi, this event leaves an indelible impact on Hatake. Therefore, it’s no surprise that when Tobi, the masked man, is unveiled as Kakashi’s deceased best friend Obito, fans are left in a state of astonishment. As Kakashi engages his former friend in a life-or-death battle, the tension has never been more intense.
In the Kamui dimension linked by their Mangekyo Sharingan eyes, these two engage in a breathtaking battle. What sets this clash apart is the concurrent depiction of a bygone moment when they sparred as allies. Unlike in other instances where flashbacks might detract from the primary fight, here, the past fluidly blends with the present, resulting in an emotional confrontation. This is particularly noticeable towards the end of the battle, as they figuratively shove aside their reconciled past selves to inflict wounds upon each other.
6. Rock Lee vs. Gaara
Viewers were already tense about Gaara’s initial portrayal as a ruthless Jinchuriki against Rock Lee during the Chunin Exams, setting the stage for this iconic Naruto fight. The skirmish commences with Lee, predictably, finding it tough to approach Gaara, his attacks effortlessly deflected by Gaara’s sand. However, when spectators begin to worry, Lee removes his training weights, leading to a shift in the battle dynamics.
Losing weight enhances Lee’s speed significantly, allowing him to strike Gaara for the first time in a battle. However, Gaara, protected by his sand armor, remains unharmed and responds with increased ferocity. This provokes Lee to unlock five of his inner gates to maintain pace. In an extraordinary display of sheer determination, Lee manages to make the powerful Jinchuriki, Gaara, recognize his power. Nevertheless, it is Lee’s own techniques that eventually take a toll on him, leading to his defeat.
5. Pain vs. Jiraiya
In the story, the well-known Sannin, Jiraiya, sneaks into the secretive Hidden Rain village for information about Akatsuki’s feared leader, Pain. However, to his surprise, he encounters this adversary who turns out to be none other than his former student, Nagato. Despite this unexpected reunion, Jiraiya is compelled to engage in combat due to the circumstances. Given Pain’s possession of the Rinnegan, it was clear that this battle would not be an effortless one for fans.
Due to his past as a pupil of Jiraiya, Pain was already aware of his vulnerabilities. This put Jiraiya at a disadvantage against an adversary who knew him well but whom he barely knew. Consequently, despite Jiraiya’s valiant attempts, Pain effortlessly deflected his Summons and Ninjutsu, leading to one of the saddest moments in the series as the fight came to an end.
4. Madara vs. Might Guy
In the series, Madara has risen to become one of the most formidable villains, surpassing even the Five Leaders. However, when he transforms into the Jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, his power grows exponentially. Against this monstrous opponent, Might Guy resorts to opening the eighth and final gate of death, multiplying his own power by ten, allowing him to stand shoulder to shoulder with Madara in combat.
In this shape, his power is immense; even Madara concedes him as one of his toughest adversaries ever encountered. If not for his rapid recovery, Guy’s final strike might have claimed the Uchiha’s life. Unfortunately for Guy, he endures, and it’s Guy who must bear the consequences of opening the Gates.
3. Naruto vs. Pain
Following Jiraiya’s demise, his two disciples confront each other in an unforgettable showdown. Naruto kicks off the battle with vigor, utilizing Lady Katsuyu’s intelligence and the powerful Sage Mode skills he’d honed, making a grand entrance that ranks among the most spectacular in anime lore. However, it quickly transpires that this isn’t merely a contest of strength but also ideologies. Despite Pain having killed Naruto’s mentor and annihilated his village, he manages to provoke Naruto into questioning his core values.
Yet, despite Naruto’s faith wavering, Hinata remains steadfast in her belief in him, risking her own life to aid him. This action triggers the Nine Tails, causing Naruto to go berserk. True to his nature, however, he eventually regains control over himself, opting to comprehend Pain rather than engage in combat with him. In doing so, Pain undergoes a transformation of heart.
2. Killer B vs. Sasuke
In the battle that ensued after Sasuke activated his Mangekyo Sharingan, it was clearly demonstrated that this powerful ability is not invulnerable, as shown by Killer B. The duel commenced with a sword technique (Kenjutsu) where B’s distinctive fighting style immediately gave him the advantage. A short while into the fight, B inflicted a fatal wound on Sasuke in an attack that would have been lethal without Karin’s timely intervention.
Initially, Sasuke endeavors to employ his clan’s powerful Genjutsu, but realizes it’s ineffective against the Eight Tails aiding B. Jugo successfully nurses Sasuke back to health. However, B releases the Eight Tails’ full might, compelling Sasuke to retaliate with Amaterasu. It seems Sasuke emerges victorious, but it’s later revealed that B cleverly tricked him into retreating, resulting in a substantial defeat for Sasuke on his record of battles.
1. Naruto vs. Sasuke
The epic battle between Naruto and Sasuke is often hailed as the series’ finest, and rightfully so. This battle is action-packed, brilliantly executed visually, and deeply moving. It also underscores the immense growth of these characters, as they unleash their most potent abilities in a fight that actually reshapes the environment.
In spite of Naruto’s reluctance to harm Sasuke, he finds himself resorting to progressively intense moves to keep pace with his comrade. When they’re both drained, their battle turns into a raw physical contest, where they trade blows and kicks until they summon the remaining energy for a climactic exchange of their signature techniques. As endings go, it’s fulfilling, inevitable, and an appropriate culmination to Naruto’s legendary series of epic fights.
