Nielsen Reveals 2024 Streaming Top 10: 9 Animated Hits, 1 Big Dwayne Johnson Flop!

2024 witnessed a dominance of animation in the movie industry. Out of the top five highest-grossing films, an impressive three were animated: Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (earning $1.69 billion), Disney’s Moana 2 (at $1.02 billion), and Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 (with $969 million). The exception was Red One, an action-comedy from Amazon MGM featuring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, which was the sole live-action movie on Nielsen’s list of the most-streamed films in 2024.

According to Nielsen, Moana (Disney+) led the pack with a staggering 13.03 billion minutes viewed between January 1, 2024, and December 29, 2024. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (Netflix), released in 2023, came in second with 11.72 billion minutes before leaving the platform in October. Red One (Prime Video) claimed the third spot with 8.28 billion minutes in just 17 days. After its first four days on Prime Video, Amazon announced that Red One had broken Amazon MGM’s record for most-watched movie debut ever with 50 million viewers.

4th place in 2023 goes to “Trolls Band Together” across Peacock, Netflix, and Prime Video, accumulating a total of 7.44 billion minutes watched. The 5th spot is held by “Minions,” released in 2015 on Netflix, with 6.77 billion minutes viewed. This is closely followed by the Colombia-set musical “Encanto” (Disney+) at No. 6 with 6.61 billion minutes, and “Frozen” (Disney+) at No. 7 with 6.28 billion minutes watched in 2021. The 8th spot is taken by “PAW Patrol: The Movie” (Paramount+) with 6.05 billion minutes, while “Inside Out” (Disney+) holds the 9th position with 5.78 billion minutes viewed and “The Boss Baby” (Netflix) rounds off the top 10 with 5.59 billion minutes watched in 2017.

In its debut in North American cinemas on November 15, Red One claimed the top spot at the box office, earning $32.1 million during its opening weekend. However, it slid down to third place the following weekend with the arrival of “Glicked” — a double feature including Wicked and Gladiator II. After an eight-week run in theaters, the film collected $185 million globally (while reportedly costing around $250 million to produce).

The initial film, written by Chris Morgan, a seasoned writer from the Fast & Furious franchise and conceptualized by Hiram Garcia’s production team, faced negative reviews from critics – earning just 30% approval on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it was more favorably reviewed by audiences, who rated it 90% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter.

In an interview with Variety last November, Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution at Amazon MGM, stated that while opinions on these movies may vary, they hold significance for our business model. If we can release them in cinemas and cover our advertising and printing expenses, then it’s a no-brainer for us. This is because we’re essentially getting a large promotional campaign funded before the movie becomes available for streaming.

A film analyst predicts that “Red One,” featuring Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, and J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus, will incur losses exceeding $100 million even if its box office performance is strong. Originally intended for Amazon’s Prime Video, the movie was later moved to cinemas and became available on the platform on December 12, perfectly timed for holiday viewing.
